Well we did it. We flew an object into a comet just to see what would happen. The part that amazed me most was that we hit it. Now they have to study the measurements and find out what comets are really made of and what we can do about one if it is on a collision course with Earth. Read more about it here Deep Impact There are even some great pictures.

Not only did NASA hit the comet, but they hit it exactly where they wanted to. I was watching NASA TV via the internet and it was fun to hear them make course corrections, and requests for fuel. Very amazing.

And I thought my physics class was hard, imagine the equasions they had to solve to hit that thing! Hopefully in 10 years I'll be the one figuring all that stuff out, but until then I'm calculating the force of gravity using little weights. (9.81 Newtons). Thanks for the link GreyStorm, I just love astronomy and space stuff!

These are all worthy things but much more expensive than unmanned space probes.

The entire budget of NASA, for all of its activities, is less than 1% of the federal budget. Compare that to the tax money we spend paying interest on the national debt - 10% of the federal budget. Republicans and Democrats are content to see all that money just disappear without building anything or promoting the public well being.

Balancing the federal budget and reducing the national debt would free up a lot of money for poverty programs (or pick your favorite charity). Yet where is the outcry to do this?

I think they should have told Tom Cruise they were making a movie better than Armageddon and then launched him up there.
