Today, I was at lunch with some friends, and three 20ish boys came in with their pants hanging down to show off their underwear (one in tighty whiteys).  One of them had their pants pushed down so low, in the back, his entire butt cheeks were uncovered and in front you could see the outline of his dick.  There were two small children close by, staring and pointing, while their dad tried to divert their attention.

My question is, don't these guys know that they look ignorant?  Where did this practice start?  I know it's been around awhile, and for some time was a cultural thing, but why do they do this?  Is it to signify something, or is it just a fashion statement?  I am a teacher, and I have to say, we tell six year olds that they need to pull up their pants, because they are beginning to follow this trend.  Is it just that...a trend?

It has nothing to do with "culture."
They're fuckin' ignorant and stupid.
One time walking into a supermarket three guys were in front of me dressed like that.
I said to them; "Hey guys, hike up those drawers, there's ladies present."
A young girl who worked there started laughing.
Also when I drive by a certain drug store there's these kids who hang out there all dressed in black with dyed black hair.
Anytime I drive by and they're there I put the window down and yell out, "Trick or Treat!" to them.
It's funny, they give me the finger and I point to my crotch!

My suspicions is that they are nothing but attention whores and that's the best they have to get some.....

And sadly enough, it appears its working too.

I almost feel embarrassed for them, that's how ignorant it looks.

No.

They think they're being "rebels", when they're acting more like clones of thier peers. But that's been going on for a long time.

I understood the practice to start in black urban culture.

When released from the city or county jail from an overnight stay, one is returned their shoelaces, belt, watch, wallet, etc... and expected to leave pretty much immediately.  Meaning, they step outside with their pants hanging a little loose.

In part, this also seems to be why people wore sneakers with the laces removed, and a reason velcro became popular.

Hmm, so it sounds like just another nod of the head to jailbird culture.

That's very interesting, Stephann.  Thanks.  It still looks stupid, though.

Sometimes this kind of idiocy brings its own justice. Enjoy.

TGIS: Thank God It's Schadenfreude! (69)

This week's joy in the misfortune of others comes courtesy of the Wall Street Journal (from Tuesday, June 20; subscription required):

Young men and teens wearing low-slung, baggy pants fairly regularly get tripped up in their getaways, a development that has given amused police officers and law-abiding citizens a welcome edge in the fight against crime.

James Green might have made a clean getaway when he stole seven DVDs from a Blockbuster store in Ferndale, Mich., last October. But he, too, was undone by his baggy pants.

Mr. Green, 30, rode away on a bicycle, with copies of "Donnie Brasco," "The Bourne Identity" and "Sin City." When a patrol car knocked over the bike, he fled on foot. As he ran, his trousers slipped down past his hips, and he tripped. He hitched up his pants and ran a few more yards before falling again.

Things got worse and worse for Mr. Green. He finally kicked off his pants and shoes and "ran into the yard of 1720 Beaufield," police officer Kenneth Jaklic said in a report of the incident. "I ran after [Mr. Green], yelling at him to stop." Instead, Mr. Green jumped over a fence behind a garage, and Mr. Jaklic immobilized him with two Taser darts in the back.

. . . .

Denny Fuhrman, a 58-year-old police officer in Lynnwood, Wash., was escorting a handcuffed suspect to his patrol car one afternoon in 2004 when the youngster twisted free and took off running.

As he bolted, the baggy blue jeans he was wearing fell down around his ankles, sending him tumbling onto the pavement of a busy street. "He was rolling around in traffic, looking like a fish out of water," recalls Mr. Fuhrman.

Mr. Fuhrman's suspect wiggled out of his trousers before getting up from the street and running toward a nearby mall, as the police officer radioed a description to his colleagues: "White male, running, no pants, in handcuffs," Mr. Fuhrman recalls saying. The young man was arrested at the entrance of a J.C. Penney store after Janice Lewis, a 61-year-old passerby, grabbed his shirt collar and held on to him until police arrived.

. . . .

Ill-fitting pants aren't suited for jumping, either, as Noah Donell Brown of Hendersonville, N.C., learned. The 24-year-old tried to leap over the counter of a Subway sandwich shop during a robbery attempt, but he stumbled and came crashing down in front of several startled store employees. Mr. Brown, armed with a gun, got up and fled into a nearby residential neighborhood as the police were notified.

Police didn't have to work hard to arrest him. As Mr. Brown tried to scale a picket fence in someone's backyard, he caught his pants, according to the police department. He was found dangling upside down, his pants at his ankles and tangled in the fence.

. . . .

Dwight Oliver showed up for a court hearing in Seminole County, Fla., wearing loose pants and tennis shoes without laces. While waiting for his case to be called, Mr. Oliver tried to flee. He lost his pants as he ran down the steps of the courthouse.

He was later found in gray boxer shorts in a library three blocks from the courthouse and was arrested after a scuffle with police officers. It turned out the charges he was scheduled to face in court that day were dropped. He was slapped with new charges of resisting arrest and sentenced to two and a half years in jail for the incident. He served 17 months and was released in April.

. . . .

Karl Franklin tried to run from police in Tallahassee, Fla., in pants that were on fire. According to a police report, the 30-year-old had stashed a lighted cigarette in his baggy pants and appeared to be preparing to urinate at a traffic intersection.

Seth Stoughton, a police officer at the time, approached Mr. Franklin and noticed the man's pocket was smoldering. Mr. Franklin, who could not be reached, started to run, but his pants dropped and tripped him up.

. . . .

When other officers arrived, they cut off the burning patch of cloth and arrested Mr. Franklin.

it is all my fault.....when i was a teenager, wearing bell bottoms that were too long, listening to rock n roll, and smoking pot, i said to my mom i will never be freaked out by what my kid does.....i will always be a cool mom and listen to his music and let him choose his clothes.....

momma said uh huh.....and at that moment she placed a curse on all of humanity.....so that something like baggy britches and rap would consume society for a while, and be enough to make me tell my kid "oh hell no you aint wearing that.......listening to that.......etc.

i apologize for doing this to all of you.......that damn youth is a bitch to pay for......

ps.  i have placed this curse on my son also......in 20 years yall are in for a helluva show

LOL, I was out doing errands this afternoon and guess who I saw?
Yup, those fuckin Zombies at the drug store hanging out in the parking lot again!
I pulled through the parking lot and beeped my horn at them and yelled out "Trick or Treat" to them and one guy threw a coke can at my car but missed and I yelled "Right here Frankenstein!" as I pointed at my crotch.
Hey, maybe we could start a new fad!
Sneak up behind those guys with the pants hanging off of them and de-pant them and take off with their pants.
They're so baggy they'd come right off over their shoes.

Not long ago, in My town, an incident like this happened to a group of " 7 zombies"---they were dirty, barefoot, scruggy long hanging  jeans with holes, ragged edges, long stringy hair, greennail polish and the girls obviously wore no bras.

The man drove his car in to them screaming at them, calling them bums, freaks, whores---his bottle of coca cola splattered broken glass everywhere---

I too hate that attempt to rebel, I find it offensive--just like My rebellion was 35 ears ago---its a fine line I walk with tolerance.

It is the same school of thought as when girls wore their pants in the 70's..........cameltoe. Orrrrrr, as they did around here recently for several years.........really low and tight hiphuggers with a thong sticking up out of the back.

It is all about "look at me!!! Aren't I cool and sexxxxyyyyyyyy??"

They will grow out of it.

Then there was this group hanging outside of a bar that was closed to the public smoking since they couldn't smoke inside.  They had on various amounts of leather and some with collars.  Maybe they were trying to be cool.....No wait that was us!  Why are we so quick to look with disdain at other groups besides the ones we are in that do things acceptable to their own group?
