What you have to understand with the internet is that anyone can be anything - it doesn't mean it has any relevance to their real life. If you're online and looking for real time, you need to be very thick skinned, because you're going to have to sort through a lot of BS to find one or two real people - and then you have to hope that they're attracted to you and you're attracted to them and perhaps THEN you'll progress to meeting. You can minimize the wankers by not engaging in any kind of cyber play (this is all many are looking for), by limiting your consideration to those that have experience (although it's not always to tell - I always looked for specific information on specific scene events they'd attended), by revolving conversations around who each of you are as people (rather than what would you do to them), and by moving things along fairly quickly to meet face to face for coffee or dinner (think in a matter of weeks, not months). Set up your schedule, let them know what it is, and don't take excuses. As always, your best bet is to get involved in your local scene.
