The switch overtly tops, whereas the brat does it covertly. (And with some brats that I have seen, it was not that covert either).

Whats the difference between a Brat and a Switch?  Seems both want some form of control.

To Me...a brat is someone who acts out on purpose to gain attention/punishments.
A Switch sometimes likes to be a Dom/me and other times likes to be the submissive.

I see completely different behavior between the two.

NeverForget -> RE: Brat/Switch (8/16/2007 4:06:46 PM)

Granted I haven't read all of the replies..however a brat I feel defines me based on that in which I have read.  My master winced at the first time I bit him on the neck although at that time we were just "partners".  He explained it has to do with the dominant/submissive role.  I do however notice myself enjoying the fact that if I act out I will be punished.  Thus why I consider myself a brat.  I am new to the lifestyle and my thoughts may be incorrect and improper, if I offend anyone I apologize.

A brat isn't a switch.

A switch can be a brat, sure.

But bratting is being manipulative and acting out in order to get some sort of attention, a farce of trying to be in control.

Switching is actually Being in control and being Given that control by another.

PairOfDimes -> RE: Brat/Switch (8/16/2007 5:13:11 PM)

In the lexicon that I use, "brat" describes a personality, or behavior of impudence--someone who gets off on naughtiness and punishment themes might be called a brat. "Smart assed masochist" is another phrase to describe people who like to sass in order to get "punished" with pain. A switch is someone who either likes to top and bottom, or likes to dominate and submit, or even both.

To throw a further wrench into the works, there are people who like to control scenes in which they receive pain, often without any overtones of brattiness or sassiness or punishment. Those people are called dominant masochists.

Exactly. Only, I have seen too many instances where Doms/Masters were oblivious to the reality that the brat was, in essence, in control "behind the scenes" and allowed them to be the de-facto top. Hence, taking the farce to a level of covert reality.

I'm not talking topping.

You are alluding that Topping and Domming are the same thing and that submitting and bottoming are the same thing.

Subs can top.  Switches dominate.  Tops can bottom.  Switches submit.

(And yes, switches can top and bottom too, if they are inclined to do so)

Quite honestly, I am now sitting here with a big Scooby Doo-esque "Huh?" on my face.

For me as a dominant individual, the intricacies of distinguishing between 'topping' and 'domming' are lost. Maybe the nuances become clear to you out of the more complex alternating dynamic of being a switch - care to enlighten me?

Also, since we are dinstiguishing between concepts and semantics, do you understand there to be a distinction between 'domming' and 'dominating'?

Here's a post someone else made in the Switch forum.

It pretty clearly describes in short the differences that a lot of us see.

Top - person doing
bottom - person being done to
dominant - one in control
submissive - one giving up control

Very basic definitions, but when Sir says "give me a massage" and I do so, he is the dominant and he is bottoming. I am the submissive and I am topping.
When Sir says "lay down" and spanks me, he is the dominant and is topping, I am the submissive and am bottoming.

Top or bottom is about who is actively "doing" something. Which means in 69 you are both Tops AND bottoms at the same time. :)

Sounds to me like you need to not worry about the top/bottom distinction. You have a sub and are a Dom and are happily in control. Don't worry about it.
