This was copied from my 360 blog.

I have not been able to write on my blog for the last few days.
I finally got a to use a computer to be able to connect here and let people know what happened in my life on Monday August 13th 2007.
We had the storm that took down the tree that I shared the photos of on my last blog addition I believe that storn was on Saturday and then on Monday we had another huge storm that had a lot of cloud to ground lightning.....well lighting stuck a huge cottonwood tree in a lot next to my house in traveled a root of the tree up some steel material on the corner of my home went through the cable tv line and started a fire in the back of my tv in my bedroom.
I tried for a few minutes to put out the fire but relalized I would not be able to and knew I had to get my cats and myself out of there! When the lighting stuck I was talking to my mother and told her that lightning had stuck the house and my bedroom was on fire, I screamed for her to call 911!!!
I was able to find one of my cats and took him(Jackson) out to my car, then ran back in to try and find the other three. By this time the fire had begun to spread, when the lightning hit it knocked out all the lights, I went back in to find my other three cats with a flashlight. The cats were so scared from the sound of the lightning(which sounded like a bomb!) that they went and hid, it was a fluke that I got the first one as he ran after me once I saw my room on fire.
The smoke was getting worse as I re-entered and called for my cats in panic. I searched and screamed out for them as long as I could until the smoke got to be to much..... I couldn't breath anymore so I was forced to leave the house.... It seemed like it took forever for the fire dept. to get there..... when they did I was in full panic distress and screamed for them to find my other three cats and I totally lost it.
About 3 minutes later a woman fireperson brought out one of my cats alive(Nikki) and went back in, I put the cat in my car and kept screaming to the firepeople going in and out to please find my other two cats, I was hysterical........It was a while which seemed like forever when a fireperson came out with another cat, my Sasha, she was not breathing and I tried to give her mouth to nose air and chest compressions and pleaded with the woman to give her some oxygen from her mask, she did but Sasha was dead....... It was quite a while before they found my forth cat, my Ava.....she also was ot breathing, we tried everything but she also was deceased, my baby who was soooo dependant on me......by this time my family started to arrive, needless to say at this point I had lost it and was in shock.
The firefighters were able to stop the fire at my bedroom but it was totally destoyed, but because I had had my house sut up because the air-conditioner was on the smoke damage was extensive. I lost soooo mant things, but the worst is the loss of my babies.
I am now staying at my sisters with my 2 cats as my home is not habitable.
I am meeting with the Red Cross tomorrow to get help with temporary housing until all this is straightened out with the insurance company.
I am totally devastated and grieving.
This is all I can write for now. Please keep me in your thoughts, I need all the healing energy I can get.
Huggz, Missy.

Missy,

i am so sorry about all that you are going through and, especially, about the loss of two kitties.  i know how terribly sad that is.  i had a wonderful cat for 19 years and when i lost her, during a cross country move, i stayed and looked for her for 2 days before i had to give up and leave.  i will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.  It will take time to heal from this but try to stay positive.

i am so very sorry to hear of your loss. your house can be rebuilt, but losing your cats, and being helpless to prevent this, must be so devastating to you. i hope that you do realize that you did all that you could and more to try to save them. i do wish you all the best in all of this.

Thank you so much M and SugarMC for your kind words..

I am still in shock I think and am having a really hard time sleeping, your kind words mean a lot to me.  Have not slept all night. I would have wrote a more personal opening post here at CM about what happened but could not stand to write about it again.

It is very difficult as I had lived in that house a lot of my years, it is the house my folks bought when they got married.
It is a duplex, I lived in the upper, my son and mom  in the lower. I am taking care of my mom she is 80 years old and is fighting lung cancer. Now the 3 of us are homeless and my 2 cats and my son's 2 cats and my dog that lived downstairs with my mom and son after tearing his knee ligiment last winter.

slavejoygirl, I am really trying to hold on to some positivity and know that although this part of my journey is the toughest it's ever gotten, I know down the road a ways I will realize the lessons I was meant to learn from all this.

MsStryker. thanks for the lighting of the candle, please be really careful when your burning them, as I have witnessed now the terror of fire as a destructive force.

girl4you2, this is the 3rd time our house has been hit by lighting I think it is the huge Cottonwood that is so close that attracts it. My mother refuses to reconstruct it, she does not want to live what time she has left in fear. So we are going to get tempory housing through the Red Cross, sell the property to a near-by college that has wanted to purchase it for some years now to expand their campus.  When we are done with the process of the insurance claims for the losses, we plan to buy a new home. Thank you for you well wishes and support.

My friends and family have been unwavering in their support. I made the post here to let my friends here know that I will not be as present as I usually am because of the circumstances.
I hope to check in whenever I can to see whats going on and how ya all are doing.

Love out to all who I have come to know and befriend here. I willl be back more regularly as soon as things get more settled for me.

Missy.

P.S. I plead with all of you to get fire extinguishers and have them throughout your homes, in every room if possible and know how to use them. I wish I would have done so and that is my first lesson learned, I could have distinguished the first flames had I had one and my girls would still be with me, I miss them sooooooo much.

i am sorry for your loss that had to be so very traumatic for you.  It might be a good idea to look into support groups or some counseling.  Try to stay positive and look on the bright side and towards a better future.  i agree 100% with you abou the extinguishers - lots have them but never read how to use them. There are about 3 different kinds depending on which kind of fire it is - electrical, liquid fire, or combusubales.  You aim at the base of the fire and work your way up. You try to get as close as you can to the fire. You never start and stop the spraying - that just gives the fire time to breath again and flare up.  Just spray consistently till nothing is left.  Good luck to you and your family.

I understand "totally devastated" after a home fire.
My therapist says I still havent recovered.  I cant seem to put up any of the "memories" on my walls I hung previously. My walls are still bare, everything still in boxes, transplanted to the basement.
My Aust shepherd goes banana's when she hears fire engine sirens and my cat, who was rescued, has ever since been disinterested in human contact except to say "hi" when I come home, disappears, only to come sleep with us at night.

I only hope you can get beyond this, as well as your pets.
My therapist says my reaction is a common reaction.  She also says tis why so many move after a fire and dont return to the home.

Good luck

Sorry to hear this happened to you.  Maybe its best to get away from the ""scene of the crime" for a while in addition to therapy to rebuild your emotions back to normal.  Maybe at your sisters or the Red Cross Shelter you can focus more on rebuilding your life.  I'm sure it must be really hard when two cats you loved died.  It's good to get a chance to talk about it and just miss them.  As they say, time heals all wounds.

Best wishes to you!!

Missy,

First off, I am amazed that lightening can travel through tree roots! I agree about the extinguishers. I need to have mine checked and topped off. :(

But what I really wrote for, since no one has said it yet. You are VERY lucky that all of your human family and you, came out of the fire ok. Many fire victims (fatalities) are the ones that go back in to find either children or pets. So, you have lucky stars to be counting, even though it doesn't seem like it right now.

Hugs, and best wishes..
Snug

My condolances on your loss.
I have a 100 ft length of hose with nozzle on in the back screened-in room and the outlet is right outside the door in case of fire.
