        As I am of mixed background, I am the last one to be prejudice but this angered me so...I went into a local Mexican store this morning because they open at 6am, very early, and when I take my morning walks I like to have water and something small to eat because I am diabetic..Well, anyhow, I walk in- go to purchase my items and they speak to me in Spanish and even though I speak almost fluent Spanish I try to speak English to them and they say "No English". Well, I walk out of the store and the girl says "you stupid white bitch learn to speak Spanish" and people starting laughing thinking i didn't understand them so i say "you stupid spanish cunt" in spanish and walk out[8D]- it got very quiet as I left lol...I think if you own a business in the United States you should communicate with the customers in the native tongue..I see nothing wrong with them talking to themselves in their language but geesh..how do you run a business and NOT speak English![&:]

I understand what you're saying. Here in Canada, especially in my part of the province, we Anglophiles have the same issues. Quite often I've experienced the same problem with the french bilingual population, and it is a sadistic pleasure to retort back to an idot in their own language when they don't realize you understand them.!  <weg>  I get the most satisfaction when I reply back by cursing in french yet I lost my ability in conversational french many years ago.

good for you, Krissi!  even tho I understand Spanish, I'm always self-conscious of my anglo accent.  keeps me from doing what you did, even tho I know they are saying rude things about me...

I always find humor in letting them sit there talking about me on and on until i'm ready to speak....I use to work at a laundromat where most of the population was Mexican like this crummy town I live in....they would act like they didn't speak English so I would give them change a few dollars too short and then they spoke English real quick.. "it's a miracle"![8D]

It is rude in general to speak a non-native language around those that do not speak it.  A business owner should know better. I would not give rude owners such satisfaction by giving them one buck.  In a social/family setting, I associate with many Urdu, Arabic, Punjabi and Swahili.  There is a time and place to speak those (private conference out of sight of others, or only to translate English or one of the other languages).  If a discussion is held out-loud in front of others in a different lang, it is considered 'whispering' and quite rude. Since I understand all of the above, it is still rude because others do not understand. I wouldn't give that store patronage any further.

ya know what i would have done, if i spoke fluent spanish?

i would have started out speaking english, wait for them to belittle me in spanish, then start conversing in spanish. when asked how i knew spanish, i would have told them, "well i picked up up from you guys, after all, it's such an easy language" then i would have laughed and left...LOL

but i'm such a mega brat anyway.
