the power of words !!  I was introduced to Don Miguel Ruiz by a gal here on CM.....altho she is no longer here (it became apparent to me she really didnt adhere to the 4 agreements, but probably thought it was titalizing to put such powerful words on her profile) they made a profound impact on me and I picked up his book at an airport ... its a great book.

"Your word can create the most beautiful dream, or your word can
> destroy everything around you. Impeccability of the word only creates
> beauty, love and heaven on earth".

I love the book and I love the quote.  Thanks for posting it. :)

I had an English Professor in college who used to say; "why use a paragraph when a sentance will do?"

Maybe because the word limit was a minimum of 1000 words so I had to pad it out a bit.

The most useful word is ‘why’
The most annoying word is ‘because’
The word that gives nothing away is ‘Indeed’

I’ve heard people here say they hadn’t heard of the word ‘whilst’ and I have to admit I can’t find a good reason to use this word instead of ‘while’. I do use it though because it’s what flows from my mind to my hand. Nobody says Meanwhilst do they?

I'd certainly hate to open a magazine and read "In this article I will..."

As for not wanting to summarise what you hope to find at the start of a paper I would simply say that if you had a lot of papers to look through you want to have some way of picking the ones that will interest you. You want some kind of outline at the start so that then you can read more into it. You often find that just because someone says what they hope to prove at the start they often find out something else for themselves entirely. If a paper is written this way you can see how the author changed their thinking as they wrote it. This was obviously truer before word processors came about; now you can add bits and shuffle things around.

While and whilst mean the same thing. In the UK whilst is still in common use where as in the USA it is thought to be somewhat old fashioned. Other words with -st also seem to be in decline. such as amidst and amongst. One word i like which is hardly seen is spelt, spelled seems to be more common.

Pleads guilty to using "indeed" a lot...

kittinSol -> RE: The Best and Worst of Words (8/19/2007 6:49:48 AM)

I also like 'learnt' - funnily enough, a spelling that got me (wrongly) corrected on some forum boards more than once!

Meanwhilst, back at the ranch, I use the word Why alot. Why? Because, I Learnt to Spelt in about The 4th grade. Indeed.

FullCircle -> RE: The Best and Worst of Words (8/19/2007 6:57:00 AM)

I was sitting onboard a bus.

I may have also been sitting aboard a bus.

I stood on the bus after boarding it then I realised I'd fall off if it went around the corner too fast.

Politesub53 -> RE: The Best and Worst of Words (8/19/2007 7:07:57 AM)

FullCircle......No need to panic unless you are sitting under a bus.
[:D]

mnottertail -> RE: The Best and Worst of Words (8/19/2007 7:08:24 AM)

It was a dreary, and drizzling day.  I stood in line with the others at the bus stop.  In an instant; wonder to relate, a glorious burst of sunshine evaporated all the gloom and the birds were chirping gaily.  So I thought to myself; fuck it, and walked.

I have seen non-American doctors write "Thrice weekly" instead of "three times a week" on Rx's.  I suppose "once, twice, thrice" is more acceptable English that sounds funny here, like "whilst".
