This kind of thing has been going on since the mid fifties to my certain knowledge.
Denied at the time and then admitted when it is thought that all is under control.
Then it happens again.

There was a scandal in the UK where BNFL or whatever it is called now took body parts from dead people that worked in Nuclear power stations. They did this to test the radiation levels in the tissue. Why was there a need to do this though if they think the stations are leak free? I suppose they could argue they were just following procedure. It’s scary because I remember learning at school how beta particles were the worst in a way because they don’t go through you but get absorbed by you when you eat something or inhale something. Then the radiation would just linger there for the rest of your life doing god knows what.

Enjoy.

Hi all--

Uncontrolled nuclear reactions can happen without big booms; they result in Xray and neutron flux that would be pretty local, in this case, though very difficult to deal with from a health point of view. (For instance, workers may only be allowed 10 minutes in the area; the time depends on the strength of the radioactivity).  The thing that can really make it dangerous is if there are other fissionable materials in range of that neutron flux.

Sometimes enough mass results for an explosion; that can happen with a change of volume (differently shaped containers, for instance).

Now, in the semiconductor industry, a "spill" was only a spill if the chemicals made it to the outside plumbing or outside the facility into the ground.

It's not like they were releasing CO2 or other greenhouse gasses.....
