I find this question seems to settle that which I love from that which I like.

There is no thing I'd rescue from a burning building: not worth risking my life.

People I'd rescue, but to what degree I'd risk my life differs.

For children, I'd die trying to rescue them.

For my dogs and cats I'd take some serious risks, but there would be a limit.

As I would for friends.

For adult strangers, fewer risks, but I'd make the attempt.

Those are all the people in my life at the moment.

With all due respect how you react in any such situation is unpredictable. Some get frozen to the spot in fear others find inner strength they didn’t think they had. It’s all speculation and I doubt you could rationalise it beyond; definitely your family is your first priority.

Nice to see you put your pets before your fellow humans though . I think that speaks volumes of our modern society.

Did I ever mention that I've been known as brilliantly_gifted_cocksucker in another venue?

I used to be a volunteer firefighter...  I know exactly how I would react.

My first concern would be my UM and her safety, as the OP said, I would die for her, but what good would that be, she would be without a mother...

My family and pets (non-human). I've been in such a situation once, and see no reason why my reactions/priorities would change.

If I was walking by a burning building and heard/saw kids or the elderly, I'd give it my all. The rest, I'd try to help, but not at a huge personal risk.

I would risk my very life to safe and protect my children - their lives are more important than my own- for my late Master, I would have walked through fire to save...as for pets, I would do what I could not risking my life though and for material objects I will not risk my life. For strangers, I would do all I could without risking my life too much- I have children that need me alive.

My dog, my aged and slightly viscious kittycat. My laptop, and my desktop pc.

About 6000 books oops, make that more 'cuz I neglected to count my cookbook collection in that.

All my neato stuff I hauled back from my China trips.

The oriental rugs handed down from my parents.
Oh! The 128 year old jade tree in my kitchen must be saved.
My CD collection, my albums and the few 8 tracks I have left.

Now if this fire spreads to the garage I have to grab my minibike and fancy new generator.

Yes at this point I am on fire but I still have to go grab my king sized bed because honest to gods it is the most comfortable happy bed I have ever known.

I think that's all.

OMG MY NEW WAY COOL CELLPHONE!!! So I can call 911......

Ooops lastly all the family photo albums I am storing because I have the extra space.

Now I'm done!
