Okay I'm going to make a parallel that will get me flamed, but it's chilly in Seacoast New Hampshire this morning so I can deal with a few flames licking up my backside... here it goes. The story below appeared in my local paper last week. quote:
John Lounge, 69, is accused of leaving Coco, his 5-year-old male Chihuahua, in his van for a half hour while running errands during the afternoon of Aug. 3 with temperatures hovering around 93 degrees. Lounge was arrested by police Wednesday after an investigation revealed the dog died from the heat and not from any other ailments or conditions, according to court documents. After Lounge returned to his van, he found Coco unresponsive, although he claimed he left the windows down and kept ice water in the van for the dog, according to court records. Lounge attempted to cool off the dog by laying him on the ground in the Home Depot parking lot and dumping a gallon of water on him. When that didn't work, he tried using a fan to revive his pet. Home Depot employees who witnessed Lounge's attempts to revive Coco urged him to bring the dog to a veterinarian, which Lounge did before police arrived. According to an affidavit filed by Portsmouth police patrolman William Dubois, Lounge brought Coco to VCA Animal Medical Center, where the dog was declared dead on arrival. "The dog's temperature was determined 'too high' to read according to the thermometer," wrote Dubois. Veterinarian Katherine Bouras told the officer the thermometer does not read anything over 107.5 degrees." According to a study done by the national nonprofit Animal Protection Institute, a car on a 92-degree day can hover close to 110 degrees even with four cracked windows and can rise 35 degrees within 30 minutes. "That's because a car acts like a greenhouse, trapping the sun's heat," said the study, published on its Web site. Lounge told witnesses and police he only left the dog inside the van for five to 10 minutes, but surveillance tapes of the Home Depot parking lot showed Lounge left the dog unattended for a half hour, police said. Lounge was released on $3,000 personal recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Portsmouth District Court Oct. 2 to answer the charge. Should this man have been arrested?
