It has freed me to be myself without having to pretend to be something else. It has also offered me information so that when someone responses negatively, I know that person is not someone I was meant to have an intimate relationship with. However there is a big difference between being out and being in other people's faces. Most of the time, let's be honest, being kinky is not something that shines forth brightly signaling us out from non-kinky folks. Unless you get close enough to a person to be their friend why would you they are kinky or not, straight or gay, Christian or pagan? Symbols, language, etc that we choose to use may flag what different groups we are members of but I don't think these are things we must do. Being out enough to do what you wish and wear what you wish can feel very empowering. I, personally, let folks ask me the questions that lead them to this knowledge about me -- they don't ask the questions or visit my home, it's none of their business.
