How do you feel about having music on during a scene? Obviously it might well depend on what the scene is. What do you feel to be the benefits and detriments of music in general? Do you have any specific styles of music that you use?

Generally, I don't like it. I can't focus as well, I can't immediately change the music so if my mood or the scene energy shifts, it can feel schizophrenic, and I'm hard of hearing so it can hinder communication.

I find music to be a great accompaniment to almost any scene. As for styles, they are as varied as the people who play. I'm sure LuckyAlbatross will give you a long list of previous posts on the subject.

Dear AlexanderC, Ladies and Gentlemen;

My personal preferences are no music at all. In doing this my ears can more readily focus on the slave's breath, audio escapes and the sound and or 'voice' of the whips, paddles, canes, single tails, quirts and or hand spanking as there are so many hand styles, they make their own unique sounds. However, should I have music it would be extremely low and background--I don't want to dance to the music, I want to dance with the slave.

My music preferences will be instrumental only. I find that we (in a general sense with those I scene with) find words are force focusing the slave to listen to the words or 'sing along' in their head and thus, detatched from the scene. I do like Baroque, Classical and gentle music.

the last time i played in public there was a mix of rage against the machine and god smack and some others in the genre on repeat that was REALLY REALLY distracting but when we got really into it, i was able to block it out and just listen for what Sir was gonna do (i was blindfolded) but i remember coming up from being spacy going...why are they playing rage again (the cd had looped completely and i hadn't realized how much time had passed)
like LadyHugs said, i find myself singing along in my head, detached from the scene, so i much prefer non-lyrical music...there is plenty out there with a good hard beat without words if thats what you're looking for...gothic industrial would be a good genre to look into...
if the Top has a good sense of rythm music can be good...give them something to beat along to...if they don't...for someone like me, it can drive them nuts...(i kept perfect rythm with the pulsing on the siezure light test) and it would just be better without music...

I prefer no music. Music to me makes the scene seem theatrical...and ultimately artificial.

Torquemada didn't have theme music in his dungeon...so why have it in mine?

I like music if it's unobtrusive but the majority of the time, when we're knocking over lamps, ripping clothes off and in a frenetic state of animalistic lust, we're not thinking about turning on the jukebox. ;) If it's a planned scene, perhaps with some intricate rope work or something along those lines, then soft music, some nice subdued candle light etc. can work very well.

I would like music during certain times, but Master is hard of hearing so it would have to be talked about 1st i would think. I believe there could be times music would add to an experience.

my fav is the 1812 overture by Tchaikovsky, the end is a excellent flogging beat and the music is so relaxing i float off into my personal space.

We dont generally use music as it can detract from the session and break concentration. If we make short films, we add music later.
With clients, I use music if I get a little too vocal with clients or they, with me. My playspace isn't as soundproofed as it could be and whips and canes sound like what they are......they cant be mistaken for something else.
Music covers a multitude of sins or, should I say, pleasures.

In private, we have our own songs. However, I don't care for music much when in public. My sub is one who is unable to shout out a safe word when in the midst of sub space. When knowing when to stop, I have to rely on my subs breathing and intensity of crying. These are two things I can't hear very well when the music is to loud.

At home, I almost always include music and to me it is just part of the ambiance like the lighting, etc. The style of music and volume depends on the mood I'm trying to create. I never have the volume above what would be considered background level - you can easily talk over it. However, when playing publicly, I think music is a mistake. There is nothing more distracting than music/someone laughing/someone howling at 200 decibels that doesn't fit with your particular scene to completely ruin it. Of course, someone else's single tail or flogger to the face (a far too common occurance) is also a public scene killer. So, I guess I'm of a mixed opinion on the use of music.

MOstly, I like the music the scene itself makes.

But sometimes it helps. It especially helps her "sink" as she calls it. The most enjoyable scene music for us is pretty eclectic ...

I like music while playing, but it's more of a laid-back no-beats-or-words soundtrack thing rather than heavy trashing blow-your-head-to-the-back-of-the-wall metal... Even when asked for that sort of thing, I've a couple of metal albums that I like for play that are just sooooo heavy and sludgy that it just becomes ambient droning noise. And never at a volume that interferes with being able to hear them...

I *do*, on the other hand, *really* like to use audio signals for use in estim play and hypnosis. I even make discs for others to use for such...

Music VERY VERY BAD during play or during sex. Its distracting and my focus changes. I have tried everything from light music, to harder stuff, to nature sounds {they just made me have to pee, lol}. The a/c going is about all I can handle. It takes some effort for me to focus anyways, why add to that?!

I have tried music before, my exhubby an I tried it, I was more focused on the music than on him. That was the first, last and ONLY time we ever did that.

I love music being played when Im playing ...To the point I make cd mixes for different activities, scenes and partners.
I find I almost need it for a good scene I'm very aural I guess; if there no music I demand a solid stream of communacation even with vanilla games.
Music pumps me up so the play can take me higher, it makes everything harder longer more intense.

I'm not fond of having music on while playing for all the reasons stated here ... it's distracting, I sing along (I'm a muso!), and I want to hear every nuance of My sub's responses. Master feels likewise when He plays with me (well, He's a muso too!) ... He's playing me, not His guitar.

In public, well it seems the done thing to have music, and sometimes that's to help disguise what is going on from the neighbours. When We hosted parties, Master made up a playlist of mostly instrumental music, mostly with a reasonable rhythm but not all too frenetic, and put it on random play. However, it was actually playing in the room adjacent to the Dungeon and at a volume that made it eminently possible to hear what was being said there or around the supper table. Some said they would have liked more but the majority were happy with that level and the sort of stuff He chose.

As Our new mini-Dungeon is in an unlined shed that the former owners chose to build on the side of the property nearest the neighbours

then music is likely to be needed for play sessions as Master assures Me the sound carries quite a long way. Have just put curtains around the Dungeon space which might soften it a bit, and definitely improves the ambience when you can't see the car and other stuff in the other half. Want to get some cheap carpet now for the floor which might also soften things a bit. However, fortunately Our neighbours are often away on weekends

and that's also when the neighbourhood band tends to practise (loudly!) in their shed nearby ... so most times We won't even need to use Our electricity to provide the shielding We need.

I prefer gentle music (Celtic, usually) with a slow beat, at low volume.

Too fast a beat and I notice my heart races to keep pace, and that totally throws me off (like it just fine at other times, just not during foreplay/sex/afterplay).

If outside, I enjoy the sound of the wind in the trees (a gentle breeze), and birds, a gentle rain. Maybe not music to some, but it's music to me.
