RiotGirl -> Historical Slavery (7/7/2005 9:01:25 PM)

aaaaaaaaaaah a favorite of mine. Elkatra mentioned having some links on it. Being an old fan of historical slavery i was wondering about the rest of what the collarme group has to offer [:D]

Sooooooo... whose got great links on historical slavery (in all regions of the world) Heck, i'd even go for some current slavery. Anyone have an good fictional, but factual historical books on it? Not that i havent read my share, but incase there are new ones out there? Books more along the lines of, slave life. From there perspective, from like birth to death books?

Of course for the links.. anything will do = )

Thx

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, by Harriot Jaccobs. Autobiographic. I've read it in just about every Women's studies classes I've taken.

I used to be a student of historic slavery, but I find it recent years I can't handle it. It makes me too upset.

i'm sorry to hear that it makes you so upset. May i ask a stupid and prolly already known question? Why? Did the brutalities get to be too much?

Edited to say.. = Thanks for the suggestion!!

Yeah, it did. I used to study the Holocaust too, and I just can't deal with man's inhumanity to man. When I "grew up" it came clear to me just how impossible it was for me to understand how people can -do- that to each other. I dunno...it -hurts- me that people can do these things. And I don't understand it.

~sigh~

I think, too, the onset of my mental illness made everything a little worse. I can't deal with pain and suffering the way I used to. It's like my empathy increaced. I dunno.

Riot Girl; there is a Museum dedicated to the history of slavery and its aftermath; the lynchings by the Klu Klux KLan and other brutalities inflicted on black americans. As recently as WW II, blacks soliders were segregated into all-black units. I cannot remember the name of the museum or where it is located -- though i know it is down south - but you should have no trouble finding it on www.dogpile.com, the best of all search engines, in my opinion.

You might also take a look at thne Center for Southern Justice -- i am sure they have website -- which seeks (amoung other things) civil damages from the KKK and other hate groups for current and past criminal activities against blacks. Also check with the Anti-Defamation League, which acts on behalf of american Jews.

i'd do some of this research for you, but i am like the prior author; i simply cannot abide the imagery and descriptions of the inhumanity in the world. It crushes me until i cannot walk, and so i shield myself and offer what i can, where i can, very selectively.

Finally, for information on current day slavery, you might check the United Nations' web site.
