WTF is up with all the scammers on this site? Yes, it happens on lots of sites. Why aren't they being blocked? The place is crawling with them. Totally bogus profiles, obviously fake. Is there some reason their IP address range or domain can't be blocked?

That and individuals who are actually attempting to solicit via their profile. I have reported one profile no less then 100 times and still they have remained.

For myself, I would rather endure the presence of scammers than feel a constant pressure to justify my presence here--or anywhere.  So long as a profile falls within the guidelines laid out in the TOS, leave it be.

Well said.

There are options for reporting people which are very straight forward to use. I’ve not checked how effective they are as I don’t ever worry about the profile again once I’ve reported it. It’s a very streamlined process and no single person is an arbiter of what a valid profile is. Therefore if the profile remains after you reported it the chances are you may have been too harsh.

I haven't ran across any scammers myself, but I don't really go looking through profiles unless someone catches my eye on the forums or sends me an email that I find interesting.  People who catch my attention tend to do so for positive reasons.

Now I'm curious enough to go take a peek at profiles a bit closer to see what I can find.

I have had one "male" contact me under no less than five different profile names but with the same profile each time.  I just ignore them and report them.
Yes, they are a pain, hopefully the ones that are real (HELLO, I AM REAL ... lol), will keep some of the sanity here.

I receive a decent amount of messages....I have been contacted by a few scammers, I just deleted their message , no big deal....I have seen profiles that I thought were  fake....But I could really give two shits...It just isn't worth my time to worry about whether this person is fake or not.

This is exactly how I feel and what I do.  The only person I have reported has been lately, and it's some guy that claims he thinks he is someone that will abuse um's and wants to be kept so that he won't ever do it....I  report, block, delete, move on...he just comes back with new niks...I guess that ploy didn't work so now he contacts with an elaborate payment plan for someone to keep him from acting, this time against women

can't give these idiots any more time in your life by "wondering"  just delete, block and move on....they usually just want attention any way

Scammers?  I get emails from people, not sure if it would be classed as a scammer?  But within these emails I receive (what could be to some people) derogatory texts, why *shrugs* but I do.

I get a lot of trolling emails, but those amuse me more than anything.  I don't get worked up over it, and most of the time they just give me fodder for my journal.  I kinda miss the trolls, they at least inspired me to write.  Again, just haven't seen any Profile Scams.  I like to think I'd recognize them if I saw them, however.

It's only a profile.  It's just a lit-up image on a screen.  With a millimeter of movement of your index finger you can make it go away forever or just go to the next profile.  Looking at it doesn't commit you to anything.  It's okay, really.  It shouldn't evoke an extreme emotional reaction.  Breathe.  See, it's gone.  Poof.  Life is good again.

My apologies.  I should have gotten with you sooner.

I am the VP of Scammer Protocol on CM.  I feel I've let you down.

As some are aware, the Department of Homeland Security has stopped us from capturing IP addresses.  It was something we did arbitrarily up until January of 2006, but the ACLU stopped us.  Current our legal department is in contact with the ACLU as well as the Department of Homeland Security and I have processed your comments with them.  I anticipate a response within....lemme think now....

A THOUSAND YEARS!!!!!!!!

Thank you for your comments.  Please consider we have multiple requests on this topic, and they are answered in the order recieved.

This is a free site.No one has time to filter out the phonies and botts.

Another thing, this site has grown, a lot. You`d need an army of volunteers to check all the profiles.

There are plenty of real people here, with real profiles. The crap is just part of it,along w/ the good.

I noticed it was a free site. I've also noticed alot of advertising so one assumes that there's an income stream.

I've been on CM for a long time, its a great site, no complaints. I also know that somebody does indeed check profiles (or they used to) when an account is activated.

Blocking an IP range, a domain or even a country is trivial, we're talking 10 minutes to do it. Do I care about the site being cluttered with bogus profiles? Not really. Do I care about vulnerable people being scammed by crooks? Yeah. Especially when its easy to fix.

IP range
domain
Country

each of these are gonna take out more than you want, and ISP is gonna work out to be DHCP.

so this session I have:
192.111.222.111
and you block it
next session I have:
192.111.222.222
and YOU have:
192.111.222.111

don't seem to be getting up stream here do we?
