I am wanting to buy some new rope for Master and have no idea what lengths would be useful. Master likes to do things like rope dresses, breast bondage and is just starting to get in to some of the japanese stuff. what lengths would be good for uses?

length is not as important as type, if you have the old ropes, you can measure it, and bring it to the store to find the same kind.

Ron

added: 25 feet is a good number unless you are a fatgirl, then you wanna up the lenght accordingly.

Buy 100 ft of hemp, then cut it down into different lengths.

The longer, the better. 25's are good. From my point of view, the important thing about rope is that it isn't scratchy. I'm fine with the stuff at Home Depot as long as it's soft/

Take pieces of about 9 metre. It doesn't realy matter what style of bondage you do, if you run out of rope in any particular bondage, it's always possible to tie off, add a new rope and continue.

If it's specifically for use on you then I'd suggest customizing it more for you. Get your wingspan (fingertip to fingertip with arms extended), then use multipliers. For a rope dress, 6-8x that wingspan. Or, in general, probably 30-40 ft. 25 won't do for a rope dress. For the Shinju, 20-25 ft is good, depending on body type.

But tying it with two 25ft's instead of a 40ft saves you a busload of pulling ropes through.

That is a REAL BIG 10-4 on that one TieBoy!!!!! Much simpler to add a hank when you need one, unless you are gonna marry the bitch.

I find it useful to have several shorter lengths of rope for "modular" bondage, as opposed to having fewer very long, easily tangled and a pain in the ass to work with sections. *cough* I'm not biased at all, as you might be able to tell.

That said, however, you will want some longer rope for some things. 30-50 is gravy for a rope dress, body harness, kikkou or rope corset depending on the size of the person that it's going on, how much surface area you want to cover and just how crazy you are with the cheese whiz on details, artfully burning extra rope and patience regarding detangling. :) 20-30' is good for shinju, crotch rope and  gauntlets. I have lots and lots of  10-15' lengths for this n thats - attachment points, shackles, various limbs and extremities. I also have a fair amount of fairly thin, somewhat short rope for hands, hair, and naughty bits (I have a really fun trick of turning a winky into a heli-chopter with parachute cord!).

You're also going to want to take into consideration the guage of the rope. The wider the surface area of the rope, the more comfortable it's going to be and the more it can bear, but after a certain point you also lose some finer intricacy and knots can get kinda bulky. Thinner rope, on the other hand, gives you a lot of control over details but is less comfortable and doesn't withstand as much stress - really thin rope (stuff like parachute cord) is better suited for detailing (hair bondage, hands, feet, that kinda stuff).  There's a really good video on twistedmonk's site that goes into more detail about length and width of rope ( twisted monk's videos) that you may find helpful.

I suggest two lengths of 12' each, two lengths of 25' each and one length of 40'. Buy in bulk, cut to your lengths, then wrap each end of each rope with colored electrical tape. Give each length it's own color of tape and you'll have a quick guide to know which rope is which.

I like flat rope the best and if you're going with Rainbow just be aware they can be a little slow to ship, so order well in advance if you're getting it as a gift for someone.

I agree with this idea.  As you'll have seen,  we all have a different view on what is the best length,  so 100ft allows for whatever his personal taste is ;)

ummm if you're buying rope from online...buy no less than 100 ft...i would get 500ft (but i throw my rope away quite often...especially after its been used on genitals) and cut it down myself...if you asked an online rope compnay for 4 25 ft pieces of rope they would most likely 1) think you were daft and 2) send you a 100ft piece...
good luck...oh and i like the rainbowrope.com site...its got pretty stuff....

If the site you are talking about is rainbowrope.com, I would recommend that you ask them to cut the rope, provided you know what lengths you want.  They do a great job at sealing the ends and actually encourage buyers to ask for the rope to be cut into lengths (they are not daft and will send you exactly what you request).  As for lengths, I'd stick with 25, 50 and 100 foot lengths.  Any shorter is only going to be useful in very specific circumstances.  By the way, rope makes such a nice gift as you can never have too much.

ok ok

Rope in feet:

  • 10 - 15 for ankle/wrist cuffs and suspension cuffs (bola bolas)
  • 15 - 25 for bracers of varying lengths
  • 25 - 50 for torso, crotch and breast harnesses
  • 50 - 100 for dresses and corsets
  • Other misc. pieces for tying off

What you need to keep in mind you can turn 10 feet into a zillion feet if you employ a lark's head to add length to your rope.  So shorter than 10 might be an issue...otherwise..don't stress over it.

I'm an MFP girl....it's pretty, soft and comes in cool colors.  But choose what you and he enjoy.

Length depends on applications.  What type of rope depends a little on application (suspension, mainly) and the rest on personal preference.

I'm a rope convert.  I started out on poly ropes from various sources, the best of all of them I finally settled om was www.rainbowrope.com.  My poly collection is almost all 25 and 50 foot sections of 3/8" rope.  You can get larger diameter rope for bigger bodies, or smaller diameter for CBT or head/hand bondage.  It's washable, durable, doesn't need alot of care and comes in lots of colors.   It's also relatively cheap. The downfall is that it stretches, it slips, and it never feels like the right rope for suspension because of that.  When we had a local couple (Heliosproject.com) making hemp rope, I made the switch -- and haven't looked back.  I've even tried finishing my own (which I won't do again, it makes me appreciate simply being able to pay a dollar a foot for it!)  I now exclusively buy from twistedmonk.com and have a full set of natural, black and hunter green hemp rope in 6 and 8mm with some accessory 4mm lengths.  Their starter kits come in 6 and 8mm diameters, and usually contain a 30 footer and two 10 footers.  The short ones are good for wrists and ankles, binding together or to a bamboo pole. The longer one, for a karada, chest harness or more intricate leg tie.  If that's not enough for you to start, pick up the Midori Rope Dojo pack -- it's got everything you could possibly need for what you're going to do -- suspension or not.  Hemp requires a bit more care and feeding than poly does, but it's a natural fiber, it's strong, it doesn't slip, and it gets softer like silk the more you use it.

Hiya kitty,
I use 5metre lengths of 4mm hemp for most of my ties, and 15m x 8 -10 mm for my suspension or load bearing work. Any longer than 5mtr just gets in the way and has a tendancy to tangle. Mark from DV8 house has some lovely hemp for sale, from Osoada Steve in japan,  and its quite reasonable too.

I actually have found that 35 feet for me is the perfect length. 25 foot is good if you're tying a shinju on a thin woman, but for more moderately sized women, the extra ten feet can make the difference in doing it without needing more rope. 50-60' is usually good for more elaborate ties that involve things like furniture.

What works for your master is actually a style question:

Question number 1: Does he prefer to use just one rope, or does he like to use multiple ropes? Or: If he has a big elaborate tie, does he usually get there by tying multiple ropes together, or does he just use one long piece?

I know I prefer to use one continuous piece, partially because (in my opinion) it's less elegant if the rope if full of knots where I have joined one rope to another. Other people are just fine with tying as many pieces of small rope as they need together. Others cut some sort of middle ground.

Question 2, which may negate Question One: Does he prefer to cut his own lengths? If you know he's cut his own lengths of the same type of rope you're buying, then you're probably safer just buying the biggest length in your budget and letting him seperate it into whatever lengths he chooses. But make sure he's done it for the type of rope you're buying-- for example, twisted hemp is nice, but only stays nice if you know how to finish the ends correctly, which is surprisingly a skill that many into rope bondage don't have. Don't assume he's a rope afficianado capable of weaving diamond braid out of raw twine.

Question 3: What kind of rope does he prefer? Theoretically you're getting him some of that. Synthetics are easier to cut up than hemp, cotton, or other natural fibers, because you can just burn the ends and you've finished the rope so that it won't fray easy, whereas with natural fibers you have to sit down and braid the ends or whip them or tape them or something to make sure they don't fray. So if you're buying nylon or poly rope then you could be better off just buying one huge length and then snipping it up later, or letting him do that.
