HAVANA (Reuters) - Ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro is tipping Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to team up and win the U.S. presidential election.

Clinton leads Obama in the race to be the Democratic nominee for the November 2008 election, and Castro said they would make a winning combination.

"The word today is that an apparently unbeatable ticket could be Hillary for president and Obama as her running mate," he wrote in an editorial column on U.S. presidents published on Tuesday by Cuba's Communist Party newspaper, Granma.

At 81, Castro has outlasted nine U.S. presidents since his 1959 revolution turned Cuba into a thorn in Washington's side by building a communist society about 90 miles offshore from the United States.

He said all U.S. presidential candidates seeking the "coveted" electoral college votes of Florida have had to demand a democratic government in Cuba to win the backing of the powerful Cuban exile community.

Clinton and Obama, both senators, called for democratic change in Cuba last week.

Castro has not appeared in public since intestinal illness forced him to hand over power to his brother Raul Castro in July last year.
He has turned to writing dozens of columns and essays, but rumors that his health is worsening or that he may even be dead have swirled through the Cuban exile community in Miami in the last two weeks.

Castro's only reference to U.S. President George W. Bush in his latest essay was to say that he "needed fraud" to win Florida's electoral college votes and the presidency in the fiercely contested election in 2000.

Castro said former President Bill Clinton was "really kind" when he bumped into him and the two men shook hands at a U.N. summit meeting in 2000. He also praised Clinton for sending elite police to "rescue" shipwrecked Cuban boy Elian Gonzalez from the home of his Miami relatives in 2000 to end an international custody battle.

But even Clinton was forced to bow to Miami politics and tighten the U.S. embargo against Cuba in 1996, using as a "pretext" the shooting down of two small planes used by exile groups to overfly Havana, Castro wrote.

He said his favorite U.S. president since 1959 was Jimmy Carter, another Democrat, because he was not an "accomplice" to efforts to violently overthrow the Cuban government.

Sixteen years after Dwight Eisenhower broke off diplomatic ties with Cuba, Carter restored low-level relations in 1977 when interest sections were opened in each country's capital.

Castro made no mention of Republican Cold War victor Ronald Reagan, or of John F. Kennedy, whose Democratic administration launched the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion by CIA-trained Cuban exiles in 1961.

One of the most dangerous moments of the Cold War came a year later when Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev faced off for 13 days over Soviet missiles that Castro allowed Moscow to place in Cuba.

what to watch: comments from Walmart. IMO- what Walmart wants as prez is whom will be prez in 08. they note that the cost of gas cuts their sales. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Reagan din`t win the cold war.If there were any single victors,they would be the Pope,the polish ship yard workers,the Afghan people and our friend/employee at the time,Osama Bin Laden.(and look at the "blow back" we`re experiancing from that mistake,9/11,al queda,jihad,etc.,etc.,etc.

Regan just happened to be in office when the house of cards fell.

There was one one thing,or things,that Regan did,that directly caused the fall of the Soviet Union.

Can anyone suggest something Regan did,that caused the fall of the USSR?

And now!!, bush and the neo-cons are doing everything they fucking possibly can,to get us back into a cold-war,with the Russians!WTF,republicans?!?!

Of course, a true communism would not have a single leader like Castro.

But apparently McCarthy and the other Paranoiacs of the Red Menace slept in that day in political science class.

p.s. The whole issue with Cuba going back to 1959 is that nobody in the US Government has had the cajones to stand up and go "gee, why dont we all learn to get along?"

Well Reagan didn't bring down the Soviets all by himself like some are saying... He was a part of the equation but there were also over variables that we dont even know today. We dont know the full extent of the role Gorbachev played. Many say he helped fuel the coup. And he still hasn't really come completely clean about what happened.

But even if Gorbachev conspired in it, he doesn't get all the credit either. The Soviet Union had enormous economic problems. We don't know the exact numbers because the Soviets had the habit to cook the books with that kind of information. But many believe the Soviet Union was economically dying in the 1980s. You combine that with disasters like Chernobyl which was an enormously expensive disaster to clean up. To losses in Afghanistan combined with American foreign policy of building democratic aliances and building up Europe.... It was all just too much for a dying Soviet economy to handle, and Gorbachev saw the writing on the wall and that is why he began those reforms thsy eventually lead to the collapse of the communist party.

So the end of the cold war occured because of a cumulative effect that included many factors... Reagan played a significant role, but there were many factors involved.

And we can look at what's happening today as well...
The problem right now is that the US never changed that cold war policy. The US foriegn policy is acting as if the cold war is still on-going. Not just with wars like Iraq.. But also it is influencing European policy when it comes to countries like Turkey, Ukraine, the Czech Republic in that Russia is starting to see western expansion. Also wars like Kosovo severely hurt the relationship between Russia and the entire western bloc. The Russians don't like the idea that the US and the EU is trying to influence Ukraine to move to the west. There are rumors that NATO wants to eventually make Ukraine a NATO member. And that's going to make Russia very defensive. And that's just one example. There is many others.
So I dont think the world has yet adjusted past the cold war phase. We are not heading for another cold war. That's not going to happen because the world order shifted in 1991. And history shows that when the world order changes, it never retreats. It only moves forward with the new order. But we are still stuck in that transition period. Russia, the EU/NATO, and the US all still have a lot of growing up to do.
