Now now be fair bob did I say that at all tonight?

You seemed to ignore the fact I called them heroes completely.

I addressed it in the quote you edited out.

If you fail to address it the first time, edit out the response, and then accuse me of ignoring it altogether, it is rather obvious you are not seriously debating anything.

Welcome to the block bag, FC. I believe you know everyone there.

People who enter the services do so out of selfishness.  They do so to save people, to serve their country - to be exactly what they feel their calling is.  To refuse their calling would be the selfless act - but they do so, knowing that losing their life, to save others is an act of their own choosing.  Above their family.  Above their friends.
This is a selfless act - as defined.

i don't agree with your logic, or lack thereof, in your statement above.  If i am following your train of thought correctly are you saying that if someone gets even a smidgen of satisfaction out of an action, then it totally negates the possibility of that action being selfless?

Better that i ask, if you won't mind answering, what constitutes a selfless act - can you give examples?  Using the logic you outlined, i don't believe you think any actions can ever be selfless, but i could be wrong so i ask you to for an example or two.

Welcome to the Block Party.  We've got tequila Jello shots floating around, steaks on the grill, a pool and I heard possibly mud wrestling later tonight.

I do like mud wrestling thanks. Why it isn’t an Olympic sport is beyond me. I mean they made volleyball an Olympic sport.

To refuse their calling would also be their choice, a reflection of what they want, and thus selfish, by this definition.

Rather than let whomever define "selfless" in whatever manner he/she pleases, lets pull out that old trouble-maker: the English Dictionary.

Seems there are two definitions:

"having no concern for self: UNSELFISH"

Let's see what "selfish" says:

"1: concerned excessively or exclusively with ones self : seeking or concentrating on one's own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others
"2: arising from concern with one's own welfare or advantage in disregard of others."

So those who advocate selfishness are saying we should be "without regard for others ... in disregard of others".

Doesn't sound like a very responsible position for a master or a dom to take.

No...You will only let me know...

Domiguy sizes KL up....
Domiguy...: Hey, anybody come at you yet? Anybody get to you yet?
[KatyLied looks at him in puzzlement]
Domiguy...: Hey, we all need friends in here. I could be a friend to you.
[Katy walks away]
Domiguy: Hey... Hard to get. I like that...

How many of us can Bob still actually see?  I hope that Bob and velvet hook up...They might make a nice couple..That would be nice if they were both finally happy.

Here is what the dictionary defines as selfless:

Dictionary.com - having little or no concern for oneself, esp. with regard to fame, position, money, etc.; unselfish.

American Heritage Dictionary - Having, exhibiting, or motivated by no concern for oneself; unselfish

Online Etymology Dictionary- devoted to others' welfare or interest and not one's own

World Net - showing unselfish concern for the welfare of others

Kernerman English Multilingual Dictionary - utterly unselfish

Seems to me by these definitions you can have self concerns and still be selfless - how selfless you are would depend on the ratio i suppose.

Here are the definitions for selfish:

Dictionary.com - devoted to or caring only for oneself; concerned primarily with one's own interests, benefits, welfare, etc., regardless of others.
characterized by or manifesting concern or care only for oneself: selfish motives.

American Heritage Dictionary - Concerned chiefly or only with oneself

World Net - concerned chiefly or only with yourself and your advantage to the exclusion of others

Kernerman English Multilingual Dictionary  - thinking of one's own pleasure or good and not considering other people

Hands up those that advocated selfishness? What I said was that selfless people didn’t exist because if they did they would be robots and not people. Drag up any dramatic reference to 911 you want for me that’s not the issue.  A monkey has no self awareness; stick a label on its head and it won’t remove it. A person is self aware and therefore, as defined but others and not myself, is at some level slightly selfish. Pretend all you like you are on some higher plane of existence where selfishness doesn’t exist but all this means is either you are a monkey or more likely have a god complex. Looking down on your fellow humans means the less you understand them and the less you try to understand them. Ultimately the more selfish you yourself become.

As I said earlier I edited out all the crap but I still read it and how berating me was addressing the fact I called them heroes is hard for me to fathom.

Words fall short of what we intend them to mean sometimes don't you feel? The word love can be summed up in four lines in a dictionary. Some words wouldn’t even exist if people that had brought them into popular usage had a better understanding of definitions in human psychology.

Chimps (being apes) have more brains than monkeys.

Bob, Stephann quite clearly stated that "A promise 'till death do we part', to me, trumps any desire for any sort of 'healthy' emotional relationship" meaning that those vows are of the utmost importance to him...unless I'm wrong on the meaning of "trump".  In other words, he is saying that he ALSO WOULD HAVE STAYED WITH HIS TERMINALLY ILL WIFE.

Yeah - that's what i took away from the post as well... that's what my understanding of the word "trump" is... that it goes above everything else.

Training an organism to repeat repetitive actions is no evidence of self awareness. If you'd trained it to sign the word me after showing a picture of a donkey it would do it.
