Is BDSM alive and well in the Philly area? If so, somebody please let Me know.

Go down to Passionals on Bainbridge just south of South St on 4th (I think it's 4th) and ask them what's going on. It's a big Pink and Black sign they used to be Fetishes Boutique. Also check out the Bike Stop for a decent drop by the local leather bar night.

Judging from the success of their pro sports teams lately, there are certainly a lot of masochists running around.

I guess it depends on your views on what alive and well is, and what you're looking for.

There are no longer any venues dedicated to BDSM.  There is one swing club in the airport automall area that does a fetish night and that is kink friendly.  The closest dedicated SM venues are Paddles (NYC), Playhouse (Baltimore) and The Crucible (DC).

The Mr/Ms Philadelphia Leather contest will be held in November.  So will the Diabolique Ball, a ball for charity in it's, I think, 10th year or so.  Some kinksters get involved with the Philly Fringe Festival (Diva Veronica and Mimi Divine were performers for a few years) and there is generally a kink and leather presence during the Pride festivities in town in June for the parade (where there are always at least two "leather" judges including myself) and during Outfest in October.

MaST (Masters and Slaves Together) has a chapter in Philadelphia that meets monthly.  I've recently been told a ClubFEM chapter is also active in Philadelphia.

There are munch groups -- PAST that meets over by the Penn campus, the Gate Munch that meets at the Cherry Street Tavern, plus the ACDS munch down in Absecon, NJ and the Max Munch in Cherry Hill, NJ.  Getting to know folks at these groups helps you get invites to some of the private parties that go on locally.

If gay leather is your thing, the Bike Stop has it.  The Philadelphians MC meets on Monday nights.  Justin, the recently stepped down PA Leatherboy, hosts a CODE night for leatherfolk.

And as BoiJen pointed out, Passional down off of South Street plays host to a variety of activities -- Pousse Cafe for women, the Sexpeditions tours, and Passion101 classes.

From a former Ms Philadelphia Leather....

I think Passionals is actually on 5th, not 4th.

Anyway, yes, there are no venues in Philadelphia dedicated to BDSM anymore, because they've all closed (or been forcibly closed) one after the other.  Behind the Scenes, the Tannery, the Darkside...anything I'm forgetting?  They're all gone.  At this point I have to conclude that the municipal government just doesn't want any BDSM clubs in Philadelphia.

BTS was the only one that you offer who was closed by a gov't agency. And that event was proclaimed to be accidental, for they cite intending on inspecting some drug haven that was being advertised in the local shopping centers.  They were 4 blocks off of the address that the vice captain said they were supposed to be at.  L&I apparently pulled one of these, "Well, they're not there, so let's check out these folks over here...."  And well, now it's ancient history.

Well, no one knows why the Tannery and the Darkside closed.  Everyone has this theory and that theory, but who really knows except the proprietors themselves?  If an openly publicized BDSM club ever survives in Philadelphia, I'll change my mind about this.

I don't think they're targeting BDSM clubs per se; it's clear that they don't want ANY kind of sex club.  That's why Kama Sutra went down too.  Anyone ever been to the Pleasure Garden Club?  Anyone know whether they permit open sex there?  I'd guess the answer is no.

Notice my deliberately NOT posting the names of open clubs who might be doing activities frowned upon by The Man?  I figure that folks interested enough will have the smarts to email me on the other side rather than picking it up from here.  I'm not going to be liable for another club going down in flames in this City of Brotherly Love (or Sisterly Shove.)

Ya know, there are some downsides to living in coastal southern California, even at the beach. We have traffic from hell, a one bedroom apts rent for $1100, until recently our gas was a third more than the gas on the east coast and many other things that make this not the perfect place Hollywood portrays. BUT, by LAX airport, the local sheriffs office actually runs trainees through one of the ProDungeons to help them understand the lifestyle and the difference between consensual play and abuse. They also make it a point to patrol the parking lot on the night of the parties to help keep things safe. They never hassle people, even those carrying obvious toys,, such as long stiff whips (like my four ft legree http://www.mr-s-leather.com/W81.html ) or canes that don't fit in a bag. I'm going to remember that other places in this free and wonderful country go out of their way to censor my form of sexuality the next time I'm sitting in traffic-from-hell on the 405 and decide that the traffic really isn't all THAT bad..

It is common to provide links in this forum. If you had a specific reason for not doing so, make that clear. Do not expect us to read minds. In all parts of BDSM, clear communication is key.

I think the proprietors and patrons of the venues in question could appreciate MisPandora's discretion. It will probably keep a few people from cruising through the forum and picking up the name of a club as a place for "prohibited" activities. Not to be paranoid (or am I destined to be that way cuz I'm from Philly?) but you never know who will read the information in a message when it's posted in an open forum. PMs aren't foolproof, but they're a bit more secure. And I've found that those who really are interested in something are more likely to PM for more information.

Thanks for your admonition, Beach...I'll take that under advisement.  I was specifically referencing L&Ms mention of the only open swing club in the area and why I'd not mentioned them by name.

I understand why you took my first post about this as an admonition as it wasn't very politically worded. It is not meant as such though, but as a statement of something you may not have considered. I apologize that it sounded like such. I'm having some pain and a flash of irritation got the better of me. (Not an excuse but since you took it negatively I'm letting you know the reason it was so poorly worded.) Let me rephrase the post. I was going to go back and change the original to the more diplomatic version, but decided it is more fair to the thread and you to let it stand and post what I meant to say here...

When you do not mention something for a reason, you are best to make those reasons clear. People here are often quite helpful and will jump to provide information left out unless it is stated that you left the information out on purpose. You have a valid reason for not posting information about kinky locations, but most of us do not. We don't consider such things as a matter of course and need to be clued in when there is a cause for heightened discretion.

I guess the previous three posts in the thread about clubs being closed down were insufficient reason for discretion?

That's a shame that you don't take into account the safety of others, the ability of those who own the venues to keep their careers, their homes, their UMs and so forth.  Discretion IS one of the very things that we possess in this lifestyle that keeps us safe from those who would do us harm -- the outsiders who do not understand WIITWD. That's one of the very first things I was taught going on 13 years ago when joining a private dungeon club.

All that is presently available within the confines of Philadelphia is a swing establishment.

There are.....they are gay bars catering to the leather lifestyle.  There's the Ramrod in Boston right near the Fenway, the Eagle in NYC, Stars up in Albany, and I'm fairly sure both the Providence (RI) Eagle and the Hartford (CT) Eagle are still in business.  All of the previously mentioned bars can be readily entered in google and found for yourself if you must!

Our dungeons post their addresses on their very public webpages. Our munches have locations written on their sites for the most part also. I've seen the same for dungeons and munches in other locations also.  We're on a website devoted to kink and it is normal to help others find local locations.  The club mentioned is easy to find online by Googling either the clubs name or the phrase "swingers club Philadelphia." So where does discretion come into play? You can't "out" a venue that has a website talking about who they are and what they offer. I promise you, the cops and city fathers already know about the place! Discretion is one thing.. paranoia is another.
