My dog has ripped up the hot spots he has, I can't get him vet care since it's sunday, and tomorow is a holiday. I was told put a little listerine on the spots, it tastes and smells so bad dogs won't lick it. However I have my doubts about putting listerine on a fresh owie. I put it around the owie, not on it, however when I held up the wad of cotton with listerine up to him for inspection he tried to lick it. I wonder if he'd lick it on the cotton pad would he lick it off his skin? Any one have experince with using this as a stop gap before you can get vet care?

I used to use the nail biting stuff. My dog was alergic to fleas and woud chew himself bloody every time he got a bite. The THUM nail biting stuff for kids used to work wonders. He'd lick it once and not go near it again. Not ON the wound, but around it. Theres no way he can finesse it well enough to keep worryng the sore and avoid the thum stuff. The listerine doesnt work on all of them, some of them actually like the taste.

DV, thanks for that tip. I think partner and I will be going on a hunt for the thum stuff. I remember as a kid mom put it on me, and i was so determined to suck I sucked the stuff off, put up with the nastieness, but maybe the dog won't be so determined.

There is also a lotion for dogs available called "YUK!". I am told that Bitter Apple will also help...that can be found at the pet store. As for healing the hotspots...ask your vet for some Neo-Predef powder....works great and is inexpensive.

Most discount and grocery stores open on the holiday will have treatements for hot spots that cost about the same as Listerine... but Bitter Apple to stop the chewing while they heal is probably exclusive to pet stores. Shouldn't need a vet at all.

All my vet clinics have advise me to give my dog childrens benadryl. The drowsyness keeps him from licking/biting the sore spot to a minimum. The benadryl will also help with the irritation. If things don't get better in a few days, then I schedule a vet appointment.

I'd think that Listerine would hurt like the dickens! Same goes for Bitter Apple, whose primary ingredient is alcohol. Ouch!! Pet stores sell a spray-on product that is made with chamomile and another herb that is soothing, but also tastes bad to dogs. I recently used it on one of my dogs and he licked at it a little, but not nearly as often, and the hot spot disappeared within a few days. Good luck to you and your dog!

Well I have a white german shepard. Xylos is highly exceptible to skin irratations. Hot spots are caused mainly from fleas, ticks, and possibly yeast. I battle monthly with yeast infection with xylo. Mostly from yeast and fleas. For that i have Malaseb which is perscribed for dermatologic conditions. Which I wipe the hot spots with. Listerine is basically no different then using rubbing alcohol. It's going to burn but as far as keeping the dog from licking the spot. The menthol or what ever flavored listerine you would use would'nt keep the flavor on long. A couple pills of benadryl, peroxide (which will clean and dry the wound) and some antibiotic oinment. If fleas are causing the problem and you can't get rid of them Seven Dust your yard...works well for all bugs. Or the old Cheyenne would settle one cup of tobacco with four cups of water and you rince your dogs coat with that. Known to kill mites and louse. I have tried that on my dog and it does work. Don't know if I help any but kinda relate to the situation. Thanks!

All articals I read said you had to take the animal to the vets for antibiotics or the infections will spread, and two vet advice nurses have said so too. And indeed the hot spots have been spreading, however I'll try some of the over the counter stuff recomended. quote: ORIGINAL: Alumbrado Shouldn't need a vet at all.

In the old days the vets used to recommend campho phenique. Smelled enough that the dogs would stop messing around with it. No idea what vets of today recommend...this was back in the 70's.
