Lebanese army crushes militants at camp
By HUSSEIN DAKROUB, Associated Press Writer 35 minutes ago

Lebanon's army crushed the last remnants of a militant group in a ferocious gunbattle Sunday that killed 39 of the fighters, ending a bloody three-month siege at a Palestinian refugee camp that was the country's worst internal violence in years.

Nearby villages celebrated with fireworks, drumming and dancing after the government declared victory.

The Qaida-inspired Fatah Islam fighters made their last stand by trying to stage a dawn breakout from the Nahr el-Bared camp, triggering the final gunbattles.

U.S.: NKorea to declare nuclear programs
By ELIANE ENGELER, Associated Press Writer 33 minutes ago

North Korea agreed Sunday to account for and disable its atomic programs by the end of the year, offering its first timeline for a process long sought by nuclear negotiators, the chief U.S. envoy said.

Kim Gye Gwan, head of the North Korean delegation, said separately his country's willingness to cooperate was clear — in return for "political and economic compensation" — but he mentioned no dates.

Christopher Hill, a U.S. assistant secretary of state, said two days of talks between the United States and North Korea in Geneva had been "very good and very substantive" and would help improve chances of a successful meeting later this month with Japan, Russia, South Korea and China in six-nation talks aimed at ending the North's nuclear weapons program and improving relations between North Korea and other countries.

Specter Says Larry Craig Should Fight Restroom Case
Christopher SwannSun Sep 2, 1:26 PM ET

Sept. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Senator Arlen Specter said Idaho Republican Larry Craig should try to withdraw his guilty plea to disorderly conduct in connection with an incident in an airport men's room and fight the case.

``I think he could be vindicated,'' Specter, the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on the ``Fox News Sunday'' program.

Specter, of Pennsylvania, said that Craig ``hasn't resigned'' from the Senate, only that he ``intends to resign'' as of Sept. 30. That gives Craig a month to fight the case in court, Specter said. If the case went to trial, Specter said Craig ``wouldn't be convicted of anything.''

Report: U.S. workers are most productive
By BRADLEY S. KLAPPER, Associated Press Writer 41 minutes ago

American workers stay longer in the office, at the factory or on the farm than their counterparts in Europe and most other rich nations, and they produce more per person over the year.

They also get more done per hour than everyone but the Norwegians, according to a U.N. report released Monday, which said the United States "leads the world in labor productivity."

The average U.S. worker produces $63,885 of wealth per year, more than their counterparts in all other countries, the International Labor Organization said in its report. Ireland comes in second at $55,986, followed by Luxembourg at $55,641, Belgium at $55,235 and France at $54,609.

Texas spiders' monstrous webs baffle scientists
By Ed StoddardFri Aug 31, 6:54 PM ET

Texans like to say everything in their state is bigger. They can now add spider webs to that list.

A monstrous network of sheet-like webs covering several acres has been spun over trees in this state park 50 miles (80 kms) east of Dallas, baffling scientists who say it is an almost-unheard-of occurrence in the region.

"The dominant spiders here seem to be long-jawed spiders but this is unusual. Social spiders build communal nests in the tropics but the longjaws are not social," said Mike Quinn, a Texas state insect biologist.

After supporting Bush's Amnesty Bill Arlen Spector is going to have one hell of a "fight" just trying to remain in office come election time.

I like Specter, I don't know if he'll have much trouble, Popeye.
