So, I've just finished reading the book The MarketPlace by Laura A.  Took ages to actually get my hands on the book.  Book stores dont carry the series, yet they carry Ann Rice's Beauty series.  Any who, i was wondering who else has read the MarketPlace series and what they thought.  A little lit discussion?

I've read the Story of O and I didnt really like it.  All the "love" manipulations of the girl as she got passed onto other men and then ultimetely dropped at the end (after a good ol branding) wasnt very, eh.  IMO it was a weird story.  The Beauty series was fantastic.  It was a great fantasy.  Which was enjoyable to read and even day dream about at later times.  It was clearly "fantasy land" and was enjoyable as such.  This MarketPlace book is quite different then the other two that i have read.  Its got a solid dose of reality in it.  IMO the book isnt based around kink and sex.  Its based around the realities of being a slave.  Life isnt all about sucking/fucking/whipping and clamping.  There is ALOT more to it then that and i felt that the MarketPlace really touched on it.  i loved the fact that the book wasnt based around sexual kink.  Of course it had sexual tidbits here and there in it, but it wasnt the man focus.

I also thought it had great charactor development.  It was 4 people and their trials and tribulations of learning how to become slaves.  It dealt with their own personal baggage and what they needed improvement on.  Fascinating really to watch people develop.  I also enjoyed reading about each of their own myths about "the lifestyle" be dispelled.

Anyone care to discuss it?

Oh and i saw an add in the back of the book "To Love, To Obey, To Serve" and i was wondering if anyone has read that book and what they thought of it?

Personally, I found The Marketplace to be as much fantasy as the Beauty series.  I hated the Beauty series, I think it quite possibly is the worst thing Rice has ever penned.  My set is up for sale if anyone is interested! LOL  Story of O was Story of Ugh for me.  I'm still waiting for decent D/s novels.

I have read all the books in The Marketplace series. They are great fantasy reading but, unfortunatly, some people tend to think that thay are a reflection of reality. I did think the plots and character development became weaker in the later novels of the series. The author, Laura Antoniou, is a hoot! She has written so much in so many areas that it is hard to choose a favorite. I had the pleasure of hearing her keynote presentation at SouthPlains LeatherFest a few years ago and it is fabulous!  http://lantoniou.mysticrose.com/writings/unsafe.htm  (I also had fun shining her boots at another event..heehee)

To Love, To Obey, To Serve, Diary Of An Old Guard Slave is a heavy read..not something to take to the beach and devour in one sitting. It is Vi Johnson's select diary entries from part of her earlier life and some of it is very dry..but very insightful (especially if you know something about Vi). I totally enjoyed it and learned a lot from it.

Because they are far too fantasy based.  I want to read about real people with real lifes and jobs and UMs and mortgages that also happen to enjoy kink and a D/s relationship, dammit.
