What does marriage offer that civil unions don't?

Marriage is a religious affair, where civil unions are secular.

Marriage ,has civil union as a component(legal),but it`s a symbolic act.

The gay marriage thing is a matter of gays wanting to be recognized as full citizens ,with all the trimmings. Can`t blame anyone for wanting what everyone else has.

Couples eligible to marry may have their marriage licenses performed in any state and have it recognized in every other state in the nation and every country in the world.

Couples who are joined in a civil union have no guarantee that its protections will even travel with them to neighboring New York – let alone California or any other state.
Moreover, even couples who have a civil union and remain in Vermont receive only second-class protections in comparison to their married friends and neighbors. While they receive state-level protections, they do not receive any of the more than 1,100 federal benefits and protections of marriage.

Religious institutions are not required to recognize either one.

marriage is a relgious cerimony...which why i do not support legalizing gay marriage...there is theoretically a seperation between state and relgion so, marriage shouldn't be a legal question in the first place...if you can find a church to marry you, you should be able to get married...but that will take a lot more work than i can do on my own and i have other causes i feel more strongly about, including other gay rights like adoption and such and supporting our troops...(hows that for a political mind fuck)
