This is really one of those topics that needs to be stickied in the board as part of a FAQ section.

Old guard:
The really ancient white haired old men who glare at you from their leather encased havens in SanFran when anyone younger than 30 tries to go to Folsom.

Old Guard is a term refuring to the traditons and protocals of the old, very old, gay male BDSM community (post WW 2)... Original Old Guard BDSM was formed by gay, males returning from WW 2. There were no Old Guard women... It was Gay Male exclusive.

You can Google Old Guard and find examples of the protocols they used. Such as, all bottoms must defer to experienced tops and other experienced bottoms.  No bottom can look an experienced top in the eye. Black leather is for tops, brown is for bottoms. Switches are not real players and if a man is going to switch he should do so out of state, as not to get recognized by other players... and so on and so forth.

Old Guard is not a really set tradition, the Old Guard in Cali was diffrent then the Old Guard in Texas.

I know people who have seen the real Old Guard style as preformed by an Old Guard Master... the observers are all in their 60's and say that there is no real Old Guard any more. The Old Guard Masters and Slaves are all long dead.

This seems an appropriate time for my favorite joke (as told by Jack McGeorge)"

"When did the Old Guard end? About two weeks before you joined the Scene!"

teamnoir -> RE: Old Guard? (9/6/2007 2:26:34 PM)

Old Guard is a name for a mythical set of people that never really existed. it's the romantic fantasy idea that there was once upon a time a particular set of people and behaviors that started the bdsm scene - gay leathermen, typically.

However, a number of old time gay leathermen have spoken up to explain that there never was any single such community.

And since they are dead, they can't really call you on that BS, now can they?

No. They can't call anyone on it.

I understand that the vast number into it are actually classified as "The Mythic Guard"

In Mythic guard tradition-one claims vast amounts of arcane experience-dating from the times of cavemen. Mythic Guard is a superior and well thought out discpline-and it must be EARNED!!!!!and you had best not forget it-or vast contempt will find you-wannabe.[:D]

*nod* That makes sense to me.

I see the same thing show up in witchcraft. "My mythical order is older than your mythical order so we are clearly more powerful". Or things to that effect with fictional histories or somewhat contrived histories.

Yes, cavemen probably picked up and waved sticks. And sticks are a lot like magic wands. But that doesn't seem to me like sufficient evidence to suggest that your order goes back to the stone age.

Curiously, martial arts traditions usually do know their histories. And while there are some disputes, even the disputes tend to make sense.
