I can't say that I've been impressed with Van Halen as a live, arena act. I saw them only once, in 1988, and I swore I'd never again return. When on stage, they all seemed to simply hangout and play like they were fooling around in their garages or basements. They never did complete songs... they played to each other and not to the audience... and the audiences let them know by walking out during their concert. Not everyone, but by the end of the show, about a third walked out. But the telling tale was that very few people in the audience asked for an encore, and when they did appear, people were well on their way out the door. I thought many of my local bands were more professional than those goofballs.
