To me it's like saying if you trust someone's driving enough, you shouldn't have to wear a seatbelt.

Only if there are no other people on the road. Try again.

Exactly my point.

Because he's not saying "If I have to use a condom with someone, it means that I don't trust them"

He's universalizing it so say "If anyone has to use a condom, it's a symptom of lack of trust in the relationship"

You are exactly right. Now get over it.

His values don't match yours - he thinks you are wrong. You think he is wrong.

'K?

Hello - duh.

On his road there aren't any other drivers.

His metaphor is airtight - there aren't other drivers on his road. So that's not your point exactly - it's his point exactly.

It's mostly just starting to sound like your friends aren't very bright with how they go about things. I guess I can see why you're so jaded- you're surrounded by people who go about things the wrong, and unsafe, way.

I am certainly tempted to say they can be unusually stupid about at least one thing: sex. These would be people, mainly women, of at least twice your age and most often with multiple degrees. Strange, huh? I don't get it either, but as we are friends these people often call me for advice and sometimes even hang up on me when I give it to them. Then they think better of it and call me back.

In real life I am a surpisingly sweet, supportive, and non-judgmental guy - but some people need a little bit of straightening out. My usual comment when someone tells me their sad story is simply: what else did you expect? I talk to them all night long if I have to, but I won't refrain from telling a person that they behaved like an idiot if in fact they did behave foolishly.

People have to be responsible for themselves, first and foremost. Pointing the finger after the fact is just an attempt to gain co-conspirators for commiseration.
