My ultrasound results shows gallstones the size of golf balls..blah...I have a doc appt with a specialist on Tuesday and more than likely, they will have my gall bladder removed...My liver is fine- the high enzymes is a result of my gall bladder issues...is this a risky surgery? Do I really need my gall bladder? Will I lead a normal life afterwards? Thankyou to everyone who has been there for me through this scary time of pain...you all are the best~

no riskier than any other surgery.

done lap recovery is usually quick.

side effects include dumping syndrome (need to go to bathroom everytime you eat, specially fatty foods)

gall bladder produces bile and helps in the digestion of fatty foods.  you can live without it just fine.  I have for many years.

No the opperation isn't really risky. You can live a good life without your gallbladder. The one thing that will be different is you'll not be able to digest fats the same way as before, so you have to have a good check on your diet. I'm sure you'll receive a booklet on proper diet post-surgery from your doctor. However if you want to indulge in fatty foods you might get diahrrea as a result.  The people I know who are sans-gallbladder say that it doesn't affect their day to day life... and that a little diahreea once in a while isn't that much of a deal if they want to treat themselves to something fatty.

consider the folks that cant get the needed surgery. u are blessed. it really flows ok. i have 3 small hole from where they went in. of all my surgeries it was not  he worst. you know my posting style by now- if it was  a big deal i would flat out tell you so. in my cxase gang green had set in. ki needed massive infusion of anit biotics. then a rock lodged in my stomche pipe. so a 2nd surgeon was needed. anyhow- being that they go in laproscopically- the recovery time is about 10 days not 6 weeks.

oohhh.Krissy, I wondered about gallstones...after your post about the Pain...

My Sir has the same problem, you can live just fine without a gallbladder, my mom had hers removed when I was 2 and Im 27 now..and she's still living just fine and dandy! The Surgery is much less invasive than it used to be, and you will be sooo relieved to get rid of the pain afterwards. Until then, stay away from fried foods and fatty things....oil is bad.....causes mucho pain....
