If you were stranded on a deserted island with no hope of rescue any time soon, and had only one book, which book would you want to have?
i would want the bible. although i'm a pagan, i cant think of a more diverse book . there's creation, murder, love , deceit, treason, honor, sacrifice . everything you can think of , its in there.

Probably a reference book about things that are edible when stranded on a deserted island.

I forget what the textbook for SERE S-V80-A & S-V90 is, but that one... I liked that class enough to recreate it as vacation time now.

Then again, when I was doing that, 1C2X1 and 1T2X1 were the same job... just different days. And 1T0X1 was part of what both did...

Damn! I am old...

FOUND IT: Army Field Manual 21-76-1 -- .SERE (the public version) Downloadable Version lives here

BTW - SERE = Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape

From the field manual mentioned:
quote:

QUICK REFERENCE CHECKLIST
Decide to Survive!

S - Size up the situation, surroundings, physical condition, equipment.
U - Use all your senses
R - Remember where you are.
V - Vanquish fear and panic.
I - Improvise and improve.
V - Value living.
A - Act like the natives.
L - Live by your wits.

  1. Immediate Actions
    1. Assess immediate situation. THINK BEFORE YOU ACT!
    2. Take action to protect yourself from nuclear, biological, or chemical hazards (Chapter IX).
    3. Seek a concealed site.
    4. Assess medical condition; treat as necessary (Chapter V).
    5. Sanitize uniform of potentially compromising information.
    6. Sanitize area; hide equipment you are leaving.
    7. Apply personal camouflage.
    8. Move away from concealed site, zigzag pattern recommended.
    9. Use terrain to advantage, communication, and concealment.
    10. Find a hole-up site.

  2. Hole-Up-Site (Chapter I)
    1. Reassess situation; treat injuries, then inventory equipment.
    2. Review plan of action; establish priorities (Chapter VI).
    3. Determine current location.
    4. Improve camouflage.
    5. Focus thoughts on task(s) at hand.
    6. Execute plan of action. Stay flexible!

Recommend inclusion of this manual in the aviator’s survival vest.

That being said, all of us very practical types can now say we know something of survival...

Allowed another book, John Fowles' The Magus - never quite gets old...

The Complete, unabridged, works of Shakespeare.

Would take me forever to get through, references God, and has enough references to islands that survival techniques might be there as well. If not, I'd at least have some entertainment.

Malleus Maleficarum, since I'd be stranded, what a perfect time to read an 18th century tome!

Malleus Malleficarum was a book outlining the methods witch hunters could use to rid the world of the plague of evil...

Also is great BDSM wank fodder... down right nasty!

Master has had me research survival in different climates and plants edible and poisonous. military survival guides are required reading.
so far if i had to i think i can learn to survive with a good long bladed knife and a supply of fresh water. can also distill sea water if it comes down to it.
malleous maleficarum......as a pagan witch ......well might give it a try.

One of my personal highlights of the MM was the authorization and instruction of the exorcist in the use of a 20 gallon brass syringe filled with holy water, to be pumped into the anus of the possessed.

Yeah, stuff that says "light casual scene"...

Oh, did I forget to mention that this wasn't just theoretical information... it was intended to be used. And it was...
