Everyone lies about something at one point or another. Those who insist they don't are the worst. It's all a matter of circumstance, the lie itself, the motive, etc. Only you can decide if his lies are worthy of cutting off the relationship. It does sound like there is something insecure and potentially troubling going on with someone who would lie about his job though. As to someone's comment degrading salesmen...for every stereotype of the lying salesman, there are tons of honest ones who actually believe in what they sell and their customers. And salesmen get lied to constantly. In almost every encounter a salesman gets lied to. All those "maybe's, I need to think about it, I can get it for less, I can't afford it, I'm not sure...etc., etc.," are almost always lies. Sales is the most necessary, misunderstood and envied profession in the world. Without them the world as we know it would come to an immediate halt. Look around you, every single material thing including your clothes and food, including the streets you walk on, got there by way of salespeople. You can't escape the results of their efforts.
