Senator Judd Gregg of New Hampshire won the lottery a few years ago too.
I forget how much but it was a lot.

I'm afraid I don't see what in the story makes the congressman an asshole....why shouldn't he take his chances like everybody else?

It isn't the lottery winning that makes him disliked. His support of the Real ID Act, the impeachement of Clinton, puritanical views on sex, and a love of lobbyists are some of the things that contribute to his unpopularity.
