NEAH BAY, Wash. - An injured California gray whale was swimming out to sea Saturday after being shot with a machine gun off the western tip of Washington state, officials said.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Kelly Parker said five people believed to be members of the Makah Tribe shot and harpooned the whale Saturday morning. The extent of the whale’s injuries were not immediately known.

Tribe members were being held by the Coast Guard but had not been charged, said Mark Oswell, a spokesman for the law enforcement arm of the National Marine Fisheries Service.

This is a touchy area for many people....Growing up in Wisconsin...The tribes were and are still allowed to go "spear fishing" at night when many of the game fish come in to the shallows to spawn....Instead of using canoes of hide they now use motor boats...with silent trolling motors...Head lamps and spears of an alloy....They kill tons of fish...Many that they have no use for..At the same time they now operate casinos and duty free shops that they run off of the reservation.

It's a tough one.  These people have lived in a piss poor environment for so long...Average life expectancy for a male is somewhere in the low forties...Poor education system and a difficult path ahead if someone chooses to assimilate into society.  I was genuinely happy when I saw the casinos start to pop up...Tar paper shacks turned into trailers, then to single family homes...It was interesting to see their lives change for the better off of the profits from these casinos.

It seems that something has to give...Even though the majority of the Indians in this country have been pissed on every step of the way...There seems to be a point where you have to say we profit from the technology offered today but we still want to benefit from the treaties that allow us to harvest game....If the harvest is still a mandatory part of one's survival than I would never object...However, it seems that much of what I see harvested today comes from a different place it is no longer a necessity, it is not performed in any type of a ritualistic fashion...It's almost like a 'fuck you' kind of an attitude...Maybe if I were in their shoes I would feel the exact same way.

A whale is not a fish

Basically, damned if you do, damned if you don't. But I would agree that a machine gun is a step too far. Great post, DG.

Are there any local tribes that might want to take it off your hands?
