You have to understand that they didn't realize it was sexual. They only realized that it reduced the amount of time women spent in "hystics".
I doubt it ran on batteries as I don't believe they had been invented yet, but our friend google could probably provide you with more information. You'd also be amazed at what you can learn from the late night shows on the History channel. Every now and then (I think once a year or so) they do a series on sex throughout history.
