I had the day off and was in bed when the first one hit.  My younger brother called me to tell me about it.  I remember being pissed, that he woke me up to tell me about a plane accident.  When I get woke up, I have a hard time going back to sleep.  So I got up and made some coffee and turned on the television.  I saw the first tower burning.  I thought, "that sucks, I hope there weren't a lot of people hurt."  About 5 minutes later, I saw the second plane hit.  Of course I had a different reaction then.  I started calling everyone I knew.  My uncle was working in NYC, so I called my dad.  He didn't know exactly where he was, but reassured me that he wasn't in Manhattan.  It was a weird day.

I was in Blane Minnesota, getting ready to go to work. My partner and I stopped at the local mega grocery store for drinks & sandwhiches, before heading to the new Home Depot to finish up our plan-o-grams. As we were checking out, the local bank kisok in the lobby of the store had CNN on, and we watched the second plane hit the tower.

The frist thing my partner said was "fucking Bin Laden", which shocked the hell out of me, because I had no idea he paid attention to world events. I was personally thinking Al Queda as he said it.

On the 14th we flew back home, and I ended up having every  tool with a blade confiscated by airport security, even though they were locked in a tool chest & checked in to fly in the cargo area.

I was working for a political pollster in Upstate NY who happens to be Arab American.  It was unforgettable watching the events unfold on the TV in his office as he openly worried about how people like him would be treated in this country because of their heritage.  I learned later that business suffered over the next year or so.

I was in N.H.
I'd just woken up and I was deciding wether to put on a cd of music or the News and something told me to turn on the news instead, it was weird like esp or something.
My brother, a Fire Lt. in a city just outside Boston, Mass lives in Dracut, Mass.
One of his neighbors was, John Ogalowski, the Capt of Flight 11 who was killed.
He had a small farm right behind my brother's house.

I was at work. Heard the news and freaked because my Brother is a stock Brocker for Morgan Stanley and his office were in the Towers.  Finally got in touch with him after hours of trying because I couldn't get through.  Was so relieved when he told me they had moved his office to an uptown location 3 months earlier

I was in my 10th grade Sociology Class. Our teacher (a football coach) was a huge prankster... and the OTHER football coach (also a huge prankster) came in to tell us. NOBODY believed him. Everyone was laughing like "yeah right". Finally we all went to one of the big classrooms, everyone was watching on television.... really surreal. I grabbed my car keys and 4 friends and bailed out as soon as possible... Just wanted to get home.

I was sitting in my kitchen working on an assignment for one of my classes that was due the next day.  My husband called me and told me that a plane had crashed into one of the WTC towers and I remember thinking that this is sad news but why is he calling to tell me about it, and then he told me that approx. 20 minutes later, with cameras rolling, a second plane had hit the second tower.  It was then that I realized what was happening.  I spent the rest of the day in front of the tv watching the events of that day unfold, including the collapse of the towers.  I was extremely grief-stricken over the loss of life.  I also was worried about some Muslim friends of mine and all Muslims living here because I knew the backlash would come.  In the days following, I began to worry about what exactly our response would be, because while I wanted the masterminds behind the attack brought to full justice, I was worried about the fate of innocent civillians in the middle east, who had nothing to do with the horror of that day.

I was at home that morning taking a shower getting ready to go for an job interview, I walked out and my roomate at the time said a plane ran into one of the towers. I saw it on TV so I went back in the bathroom to finish up and go back in and watch it. When I came out the second one got hit. I had to leave and within 5 minutes when I got into downtown knoxville I was told the pentagon got hit as well. I walked around the corner where the Federal building is in Knoxville, they already had it taped and sealed off and Fed agents had their automatic weapons out and seeing other Federal agents pulling weapons out of their 3 pieces I could have imagine you could conceal and hide like that.

I was in an Air Force recruitment office with my UM and his father about to sign the papers for my UM to join after he graduated from HS. At first we thought it was some sort of freak accident. Watching the second plane hit the South Tower changed that. I still remember the recruiting officer say "OMFG, we're under attack. It's the Pearl Harbor of the Millenium".

We remained at the recruitment office for the remainder of the day watching the events unfold. The phones were ringing off the hook. My UM and I were answering phones because they didn't stop ringing all day long and the poor recruiter couldn't handle it all by himself. We never did sign the papers that day, but we did end up going back 2 days later to do so. My UM was in San Antonio two weeks ago for a training class and one of the instructors happened to be his former recruiter. He stopped in the middle of class and told everyone the story of what happened that day.

I remember how eerie it was when we finally drove home later in the evening. It was like the town was deserted. There didn't seem to be another car on the road the entire time. We stopped to eat at a restaurant and the entire staff was gathered in the bar, half drunk watching CNN. We were the only customers they had had all day. We ended up sitting at the bar with the rest of the staff watching the coverage and telling them about our day. My son half seriously mentioned needing a stiff drink and the bartender served him even though he was 17 at the time. Given the circumstances I didn't object to his being served either.

My sub (at that time) worked for the DOD and was in DC on business that week. I didn't know he was at the Pentagon until I called his cell to see what he knew after the second plane hit. Even though he was in another part of the building I heard the explosion when it was hit and the alarms afterwards while we were talking. We both thought a bomb had gone off. He didn't know what was going on, just that they had to get out of the building immediately. He wasn't aware until after he was evacuated that another plane had hit. It was a very surreal experience all the way around.

Working at a small printing company in Houston Texas. I listened to alot of AM talk radio that I kept on top of my machine. A co worker came flying into my work area saying something vague about the first plane striking a  building. The news came on and everyone dropped everything and gathered about the radio. Then we all piled into one of the offices to check for more info on the internet. Then the next tower was hitas we were searching the first strike. Everyone was quiet and stunned. I worked with an Iraqi guy that was visibly upset about the entire thing.

I was at home getting ready to take a friend who was was visiting From BC, Canada to Logan Airport to catch a noontime flight to go home. I got ready first and he was in the shower, I  turned on the TV out of habit and saw the first tower with some smoke coming out. I really didn't pay attention and thought it was one of those reality shows, so I changed the channel. Quickly realized that it was no reality show and watched as the second tower was hit. I ran into the bathroom and told my friend what was happening and he told me I was nuts and must have misunderstood. I tried telling him it was real, but he wouln't pay attention and just kept showering. Eventually after he got dried off, dressed and did a last minute luggage check, he came into the living room and was * shocked * to see the replays and the commentary. We then took on the job of calling all his friends and family in BC to let them know it was not his plane that crashed into the towers.

We were on a golf vacation in Bend, OR.  We watched it unfold on TV before our tee time.  Then we were paired up with a couple from Vancouver, BC who were supposed to go home that day but their flight had been cancelled.

I was in history class. The Principal, came over the load speacker and asked all the teachers to please turn on their televisions. As soon as the teacher turned on the tv we seen the second tower hit. I went to school in a farming community and everyone was very patriotic, my history teacher was a veitnam vetern. The room was silent as all the boys removed their hats, there were alot of tears shed and many people praying. We stayed in our 1st period classes all day watching the news. It was all very surreal. A person in my class lost his unkle whom was on one of the flights. It hit close to home for all of us even living so far away.

In my highschool.  Early reports claimed New York was bombed.  People were thought we might be going to war.

RCdc -> RE: 911 - Where were you when.... (9/12/2007 3:07:12 AM)

This is Darcy

I was at work. Around lunchtime (GMT - I am based in England) one of my colleagues came back from lunch with news that apparently up to ten aircraft had been hijacked, but at the time nothing more was known. We then turned on the radio, to catch any breaking news, and I was also logged into a news/gossip website that is popular in the UK and which was giving regular updates.

Once the first plane hit the internet virtually collapsed under the weight of the hits as people tried to get more information. For some reason this site stayed up - even the BBC news site went down for a short while. There were a couple of people based in New York giving real time updates, so we knew seconds after the second plane hit. Shortly after that, one of the posters posted a picture of the buildings on fire.

The mood in the office was strange - there were only a handful of us who seemed to be aware of the implications of this act of terrorism, while the rest carried on as normal.

When I got home that night I sat in front of the TV for several hours, flicking between BBC News 24 and CNN to get a balanced view of the confusion that was unfolding in New York, and indeed around the globe as the news travelled around the planet. It was completely surreal, like watching an elaborate Hollywood movie, but for real. I lost count of the amount of times I watched that second plane slam in the WTC, from a myriad of angles as new footage surfaced all the time, hungrily devoured by the media and audience alike in our quest to comprehend just what was happeneing in front of our eyes.

I personally can't remember a more shocking piece of news - this I suppose is my generation's Kennedy Assasination in terms of bringing the world to a halt, if temporarily. A day that I will never forget.

Darcy
