Level -> Police mull hate crime charges in WV attack (9/11/2007 3:59:53 PM)

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Authorities said Tuesday they are considering hate crime charges in the case of a woman who was tortured while being held captive for at least a week, and they are investigating the possibility that she was lured by a man she met on the Internet.

The victim was repeatedly called a racial slur while her captors sexually abused, beat and stabbed her, her mother said.

Six people, all white, including a mother and son and a mother and daughter, were arrested in connection with the alleged abduction of the 20-year-old black woman.

this story saddened and horrified me when i first heard about it...it's almost unbelievable to think that these things still happen in america, that these sorts of people are still running around. i say "almost" because i grew up in a place very much like the rural area in west virginia where this atrocity took place, and say race-motivated hate crimes and racial injustice everyday. sadly those kinds of people will probably never completely die out, but hopefully they will come mighty close.

i hope this is treated as a hate crime, i'll be paying close attention to this one to see how the feds and courts handle it.

Did you see those ugly M...r F.....rs?
They look like the Beverly Hillbillies ugly cousins.

I read last night the WV States Attorney dropped the hate crime charge. The state kidnapping laws  hold a stiffer penalty than does the hate crime charge.

Simple courtroom economics, although this was certainly a hate crime.

I certainly hope they have the death penalty in West VA, and these fuckers get it.

BOUNTYHUNTER -> RE: Police mull hate crime charges in WV attack (9/13/2007 10:29:39 AM)

They don't have a death pentaly here but one is sure called for. What may take away from the hate crime thing is this, she told a neighbor months before that she was dating one of the family...IT seems as every time I turn around I an seeing the inter net blamed for theses kind of things....

luckydog1 -> RE: Police mull hate crime charges in WV attack (9/13/2007 10:44:49 AM)

So they are going to try to say this was "race play" that got out of hand?

Surely if its true she was dating one of the family months before hand, then its not a racially motivated attack. Even if they did use racial slurs, the attack was motivated for other reasons. How could you prove someone was racist in court when they went out with someone of the opposite race for whatever length of time ?

Personally its a brutal attack ona defenceless woman and they culprits deserve the maximum penalty possible.

hm, interesting. i was wondering about the push for the kidnapping charge, i didn't realize there was a stiffer penalty for it. although i do wish there was some way it could be placed on all of these idjit sicko's records that they were invovled in a race motivated hate crime, if for nothing else than to reap the results while they're locked in max. security mostly black prisons.

Are we going to have the usual upset ,and ranting by conservitives, that charging them w/ a hate crime is  "thought policing",and somehow,"un-fair"?

It`s usually scum like this, that get all the simpathy from anti-hate crime crowd.

Politesub53 -> RE: Police mull hate crime charges in WV attack (9/13/2007 11:18:37 AM)

Owner59...... if it was a race crime they should be charged with such, and if it carries a lesser sentance than kidnap they should be charged with both to run consecutive.

If its not a racist crime then it shouldnt be made into one for political purposes.

luckydog1 -> RE: Police mull hate crime charges in WV attack (9/13/2007 11:23:19 AM)

In a sense Owner.  We should assume that you want a liberal punishment, such as weekends free from jail, like Dukakis.  OR do those not go to hate crime offenders?  Just viscous rapist/torture/ murder cases?  I really do not want these people punished for thier apperantly bizzare views( a thought crime).  I want them executed; no weekends on vacation from jail, no rehabilitation, no movie nights---for thier actions.  Forcing the victims to pay for these scum to watrch movies and take classes, maybe even get vacations is giving them sympathy.

Owner, ah,.......no we're not unless you bring it up.
Boy, you must think Hillary Clinton is a Conservative.

Nope, because I'm a libertarian.  The fact is, you CANNOT know what a person is thinking at the time of a crime, you can only conjecture based on their actions.  Please explain why someone not yelling a racist slur as they are stabbing someone to death (even though they might be thinking it!) should be punished less than someone who does use an epithet or two.  Personally, i find the actual crime morally repugnant enough to justify the harshest penalties.   Do you feel the greater punishment is deserved because you find their way of thinking backwards, evil, etc?  If so, and it is so bad, then is just thinking them enough to be punished without committing another crime?  Why not?  Well, in my view, it can't be punished without another crime because THINKING is not a crime.  Acting on your thoughts is where the crime occurs.

Punish the criminal actions, not the thoughts.

Why does it matter what their motivation was?  If you kidnap someone and abuse them like this, then you should spend the rest of your life in prison.  Hate crime legislation is not necessary.

They are not being charged with a hate crime so, no.

Well...

I just put out a hoop,and Popeye,luckdog,slaveboy and Argo,jumped right through it.

All I need is 3 rings and we`ll have a circus.

Seriuosly,I`m as aginst the government trying to control people`s thouthts,as anyone is.
But it seems that the only "victims",who ever gets sympathy from conservitive, free speech defenders, are crimials and scum,or Ann Coulter.

Where were they when Phil Donahue, Richard Bey,Bill Maher got fired for daring to critisize the president`s words or policies.

Hate crimes laws, make the crimanals lives tougher and their sentences longer.

What`s wrong with that?

luckydog1 -> RE: Police mull hate crime charges in WV attack (9/13/2007 8:13:28 PM)

Becuase it is a law punishing the thoughts inside a persons head, and we want harsher punishments for actions.  You want them rehabilitated and then set free right?  For you to compare the victimhood of this poor hurt women with Bill Maher and Donahue is just freaking nuts.

Let's see - they were fired by a private business for saying something stupid, which is perfectly legitmate (Don Imus too!).  Last time I checked, they didn't go to jail for their thoughts, though.

Yeah, great comparison there smarty.

No, you aren't.  You are for the government imprisoning people for their thoughts.  You've already stated so.  I feel these people deserve to be very severely punished for their actions.

Good try.  Next.
