TENS / EMS Unit - 9/12/2007 11:35:14 AM

I have just got a TENS / EMS unit and was wondering how to make the contact pads sticky again.

It looks like the stuff that they used to sell called IckyPoo, you know the sticky hand with the string on the back.

If any of you have any experiences with this please let me know.  Or if you know how to make a contact pad I could definitely make one myself.  Just need some advice.

Tks.

You can buy single use pads on most major medical suply places, even in many sizes!

You can always try medical tape to hold the pads on but that doesn't really lend it self to a good pressure contact due to the rubber pad.

One note is that there is nothing "electrically or electronically" special about the pads, they are just a piece of wire . So you can be inventive on making things for your tens.

The Pins/Plug connectors are of a standard industrial size. Radio shack doesnt sell the connectors anymore, but you might find them online somewhere, they are available as a "crimp " connector. I know StaKon makes that size. If you lok around you can find them and make your own wire leads. and put something on the wire like a 1 inch square piece of copper sheeting. Copper sheeting in 4 inch squares at some Home depot stores. then just solder the wire to the copper square. And use ducktape or medical tape to hold it to the skin.
Or you could buy aligator clips which are common in electrical supplies and use them on the end of the new lead you made with the crimp connectors.
A box of 25 connectors, 25 feet of 18 guage (or even 22 guage) wire and stuff, will last longer and be cheaper than buying pads at 2 or 3 bucks a set of 2.

It's gotta be cheaper to by 'em by the hundred than to replace the pads.  I can't tell which would fit your pads, but they might have something that's close.  I found a couple of companies that sell the adhesive replacements, but neither lists the price.  Watch out if you replace the pads 'cos there's two different types of connectors.  The common medical TENS unit has a 2mm pin, but some places use the clip-on EKG type.

A drop of K-Y Jelly under your pads for conduction and them tape them down.

All of the ideas above are good. Alternatives to sticky pads are clamps. Alligator clips can be connect to the wires instead of pads, which intensifies the electrical discharge. The teeth on the clamp can be stimulating enough without the electricity so placing rubber or plastic tubing over the teeth will lessen the clamping pressure (just make sure there is enough metal contact so the electrical current can flow. Watch for loosely applied clamps that can shift with movement as the shift can surprise the bottom with a sudden intense shock if the skin contact improves with the movement. I have also seen aluminum foil soldered to the tens unit wire then applied to the skin or body part with clothespins. Again alligator clips can be used to connect the aluminum foil to the tens wires. The foil can be used several times before it becomes unusable, and is very cheap to replace. The size of the aluminum foil used will also determine the area of the electrical change delivery. The versitility of placement is confined only to the limitation of a clothespin, however can be explanded by placing aluminum foil under a strap, cock ring, or belt. Keep in mind the smaller surface area concentrates the electrical shock, and intensifies the pain. Have fun and becareful for too long or too intense of electrical play that can lead to burns.

For a short term solution, take a damp sponge to the pads and they will stick again.

LOL combine electricity with accupuncture needles, and you have great fun. *grin* put the needles in and use aligator clips to clamp the needle.
Add to that the possible combination of temp needle piercing and you have all sorts of possibilities.
