I'm quite interested in making a flogger, but don't have much experience with them myself. What would be the ideal range for the "whip" (non handle) part of the flogger, and what would you consider to be the minimum length? I have some pieces of leather to work with, but the longest strips I'll be able to make are 11".

you could make a smaller whip with that...how many say 10" long strips at what width would you be able to make?...is it possible though, to cut the strips at an angle for a longer one? how many strips at what size (length and width) could you get at an angle? what kind of leather are you working with, btw? there are others that could help you much more with the construction....but just some stuff to think about for the conceptual phase... a good flogger for me would be minimum 30 to 40 falls of heavy suede or leather 18" long 1" wide...but thats just me...a shorter range, smaller area flogger maybe would be 10" long 3/4" wide possibly bring it down to 20 to 30 falls of the same heavy suede or leather

As with many things some people will try to make up for lack of length of various body parts by increasing it in others. ..grin...Master Archer generally recommend that the overall length of a flogger including handle and lashes should be no longer than the length of their arm, regardless of the imagined length of certain body parts. This gives room so that you don't get in the way of your own flogger. Longer lashes can be worked with but usually the effort is not worthwhile.

It so completely depends on your intent for the implement. I have a twin pair of floggers where the falls are thin bullhide and only about 6 inches long. Very stingy, no thud to them whatsoever. Thin deerskin falls at 11 inches would be great as a warmup flogger, a sensual flogger, or one for long play where you can get more slap to it than real thud, if you're going for sound effects in the midst of your scenes. 18-20 inch falls tend to be when you really start getting the heavy thud in to send the strike in deep, but it sounds like you don't have that much length. I'd go ahead and make the 11" falls that you have at hand and see how it turns out. Sort out your goals, weigh them along with your type of material, its thickness, and how many falls you're capable of making (10-12? 50 in a mop design? etc.) -Solar

My first flogger was only 8", and was made from an old shoe. Still one of my favorites. One of the last I made was 36". Joseff

It's simple. With the balance point of the handle in the palm of your hand, with the flogger hanging vertically. Just long enough to reach the floor without dragging.

We have floggers with long tails (36+"), short tails ( 8" or so) and all sorts of lengths in between. When I make a flogger with short tails I will generally make the handle longer ( counterintuitive I know) so that I can hold it by then end and increase the effective length of the tails by whatever the length of the handle is. I probably would not exceed 12" or so for the handle. Balance issues would outweigh the leverage advantage. I see that you are from Raleigh. The Fetish Fair Flea Market is coming to Charlotte in a couple of weeks. dee and I will there teaching whip classes. Its going to toally depend on the length of the cords, the swing space you have, and how much pain you want to cause. Long stick vs short stick - more speed = more pain. Long whip ends vs short whip ends = Longer whip ends mean more surface area coverage, which spreads out the force, short strands keep it focused...note the length also corresponds to the stick length...so if you have a big stick, and a long strands you will generate more speed and more force, but the longer strands will disperse the force across a larger area. Here is a homemade one I made, I took an escrima stick, and an old leather jacket, cut the jacket into 12, 3/4 inch wide x 12-14 inches long, put a not in the end of it. hmm. when you say 11' is that included in what you will have to braid up the dowel for the handle? if so then you can make a quirt but thats about it. quirts are small whips used for say pussy , breasts, cock nballs. if your saying thats how much you have left after the braiding of the dowel...then i'de gowith what kitty said

it doesnt really matter what length your falls are, the handle needs to be between 15cm and 20cm for a good grip though.

The handle needs to be in proportion to the length of the tales to give it the correct balance dew point. This is well known amongst flogger makers worldwide. If the handle is too short or too long, it will cause the tails to fly around all over the place when the flogger is used.

Ok then...so if the falls are x in length...then the handle should be what?.....what are the proportions?

it does depend on the weight of the leather or suede, but as a general guide, for example: a flogger with 12inch tails would have a 4 inch handle. that would be a well balanced flogger, with a handle that is comfortable and tails that don't fly everywhere.

I think it was Abraham Lincoln who once said that a man's legs should be long enough to reach the ground. I believe the same principle applies to floggers: long enough to reach from your hand to the target.

FLOGGER BALANCE: Balance is the point at which the weight of the handle equals the weight of the tails. Balance is important so that when swinging the flogger with the hand on the middle of the handle it does not work the wrist too hard. A properly balanced flogger also enables to Top to lay the lashes more precisely on a desired location on the body. The handle and the turkshead knot or other finishing embellishment on the end of the handle counterbalances the falls. The most common point of balance is in the neck of the flogger. The neck is where the lashes attach to the handle. However it is less important that the point of balance always be at the neck than it is that the point of balance be consistently in the same part of the handle on all your floggers. It is that consistent placement of the point of balance that makes a consistent throw easier. This creates muscle memory and makes it possible to throw the flogger the most accurately with the least amount of stress on the wrist, arm and shoulder. If the point of balance is one forth the distance from the neck to the end of the handle in all of your floggers then you are still going to have the same benefits as if they were all in the neck.
