DesertRat -> Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/16/2005 8:31:43 PM)

July 27th. It's a Wednesday. I think it will eventually be declared a national holiday. It's the anniversary of the day I found a very tiny kitten sniffing, sneezing, coughing, and mewing in the bushes in the alley behind my previous house. That was three years ago. Now she's all happy and healthy and is quite a character. Anyway, it's a day worth celebrating, so stock up on bottle rockets and potato salad, and make ready for some righteous partying!!

I'll remind you all again later. July 27th! Wednesday!

Aww! How cute.

Would you think me forward if I said I love your... ahem... err... kitty...

I'll be celebrating! Thanks for sharing such a cute photo.

You are a doll!!

I love men who take care of small creatures.
I am making potato salad as we speak!!!

DesertRat -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/16/2005 10:26:11 PM)

Thank you Madame Dahlia and quietkitten. Sounds like we have quite a party shaping up. Daisy is very shy, so she'll be hanging out on a shelf in the walk-in. She's not really fearful, just shy.

Bob

PS quietkitten: I used to have a black lab...they're the greatest!

perverseangelic -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/16/2005 11:45:21 PM)

Yay fuzzy!!!

Happy aniversary, kitty. :)

Re: Shy Kitties.
We have a foster kitty curently that is hanging out under the couch in our living room. She comes out in the evening to say hi, get loves, and chill, but during the day, the couch is hers. We're hoping she'll calm down some so she can get placed in a forever home, but being semi-feral all your life and having litter after litter of kittens does a number on you.

Still, she's beautiful, and purrs like a motorboat.

DesertRat -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/17/2005 8:43:23 AM)

Daisy only hides when I have company. If the guest(s) stay for longer than one day, she will eventually let herself be seen. She is a wonderfully attentive companion to me and my senior kitty, Otis. Her shyness is slowly fading, but you would have to be around her all the time to see that.

sub4hire -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/18/2005 11:28:29 AM)

I have a daisy of my own. Although I call her Little Man.

Right after all of the death's a few years back my nephews were out walking the dogs. They return with a little runt of a kitten screaming it's head off.
Ask me if we can keep it...to which my response was...sure but it is your kitty you must take good care of him.

Which as all kids do they did not. Anyway Little Man is 3 year's old now...and I could not have asked for a better kitty in my life.

MadameDahlia -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/18/2005 11:48:17 AM)

I've got a Little Man too! -grins- His name is Gizmo to most people. But he's my spoiled, fuzzy brat. He knows mummy adores him.

DesertRat -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/18/2005 3:32:37 PM)

I think I already told you what a kickass name Gizmo is. Love it![:)]

sweetnygirl -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/18/2005 7:00:28 PM)

My boys showed up on my doorstep a month apart & that was 10 years ago & am I ever so happy they did. They're my babies all 25 & 17 lbs of kitty.

DesertRat -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/18/2005 8:16:10 PM)

It's always a good thing to help animals in need. I think in the cosmic scheme of things, and in the final reckoning, giving animals like Otis, Daisy, and Ruth (my lab a long time ago) a safe, loving home will probably turn out to be the most significant thing I ever did. I really believe that. Of course, I'm not planning on kicking anytime soon, and there could always be more.

perverseangelic, sub4hire, MadameDahlia, sweetnygirl...and all you rescuers unnamed: YOU ROCK MY WORLD!

quietkitten -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/19/2005 7:03:32 PM)

All my babies are rescues. My black lab was just a wee pup.. maybe three months when I saw a neighbor of my sister screaming at her and hitting her with a leash as hard as he could. I calmly went over and asked if he would like someone to take her off his hands. He almost threw her at me. She is almost 6 years old now and is the best dog I have ever had.
Cricket my siamese was dumped at a shelter because she had a small hernia, she is so sweet and very smart. She sleeps on my head :)
Oreo my tuxedo cat was orphaned at four weeks and my lab started lactating and nursed him!!
He still thinks she is his mom. He is four years old now.
Pepper, my smallest cat is 3 1/2 years old and she was really sick when I found her in a ditch mewing her head off... It took nearly 12 weeks to get her back to a healthy state.. she is the size of a six month old cat.
I wouldn't know what to do without them....

imtempting -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/19/2005 7:19:56 PM)

My cat slept against my back last night. A queen size bed and he finds the only spot to sleep is against my legs or back.. arghhhhhhhh

Wow, sweet! That's some serious poundage. Otis weighs 20 lbs and my vet chews my ass out big time every year when I take him in for his checkup and shots. He's getting more exercise now that he has a bigger house and someone (Daisy) to chase and wrestle with. Daisy only weighs 10 pounds...just right. Aw...actually, they're BOTH just right in my book. My perfect little buddies. Is your 'avatar' pic one of your cats?

Bob

quietkitten, you're a girl after my own heart. I'll never turn away...or fail to stop for...an animal in need of help. Might not keep 'em if I can find a good home, but they will get help. My vet is sympathetic and cuts me a break on the rare occasions when I bring him sick wild birds, usually needing to be euthanized. I don't go looking for the critters, but if we cross paths, I can't ignore them.

I hear you! I am going to get a bigger bed later this year. But yeah, I'll be just as crowded; there will just be more empty space around the edge.

sweetnygirl -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/19/2005 8:20:42 PM)

I know they're big boys-the problem is I moved from a 2 level townhouse to a small 1 floor bungalow & they don't get to run up & down the stairs anymore. I keep trying to do kitty calisthetics(?) with Rascal (the 25 lber) but it doesn't work well <g>. I'm seriously thinking of getting a treadmill & making him walk on it. He's a pig when it comes to his food bowl-as soon as he sees the bottom he starts yelling & he's really, really loud. Trouble isn't so bad but he's a piglet too. But I adore them, they were both injured when they showed up on my doorstep-Rascal had burned feet from tar & Trouble had been attacked by some animal & was missing a big chunk of fur on his side. But they both healed up fine & are now pampered kitties. I also feed a colony of semi-feral cats near my house & try to get them neutered if I can catch them. I was able to snatch one of the babies & a friend took him in. As far as the avatar it's just one off the site, neither of my boys are willing to sit still for a picture. Have a great Daisy Day & keep helping all the innocent critters out there.

MadameDahlia -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/21/2005 1:22:15 AM)

Gizmo is definitely my baby...

However... I've got the ugliest, meanest looking alley cat by the name of Shadow. He's the tallest, biggest kitty we've ever had. He kind of looks like Neanderthal kitty with a pushed in forehead and a protruding brow. He's got a wide nose and the largest diamond shaped head. Anyway... he's twenty pounds of muscle and bone and looks like something right out of Pet Cemetary.

But he's very playful in the way a kitten is... he just doesn't understand that adult sized kitty claws and teeth hurt quite a bit more!

Tabitha looks like a silver furred fuzzy slipper. Shortest legs... tiny head and tiny ears... extremely fluffy! I think she was a botched Munchkin because of how short her legs are. Hopefully it was a really botched job because Munchkins aren't terribly healthy for too long. Tabitha, like Shadow, was a shelter kitty. She's also very skittery and is still somewhat terrified of her much taller, much larger two legged counterparts. But she allows mom and I to give her ample love.

Houdini, yet another shelter baby, was probably abused in his other home. He's absolutely gorgeous. Terrified of plastic bags. And the poor guy was declawed in the front. I'd pop his last owner in the nose if I knew who tortured the poor sweetheart. I can't wrap my mind around why someone who loves their furniture more than animals would get one, knowing full well that their furniture may very well be doomed as a result. There are ways of preventing scratching. But I'll get off that before I start ranting... I'm off to hide the soapbox!

DesertRat -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/21/2005 5:57:42 AM)

A lot of people are not aware of the fact that "declawing" is actually amputation. IMagine having all your finger tips removed. Not just the nails, but the whole tip at the first knuckle. That's what "declawing" is.

I have lots of nice stuff, including a gorgeous (and expensive!) leather couch, but would never ever consider mutilating my cats just to protect my things. Not an issue for us, anyway. They use all their toys and scratching posts...and me, sometimes.

MadameDahlia -> RE: Better get ready for Daisy Day!! (7/21/2005 2:02:27 PM)

You are ever so awesome.

And you're right. Not enough people know what declawing means. It's horribly cruel.

My furball Gizmo eats everything. And I mean he eats it... chopsticks... clothing... toilet paper... I don't know if he's just incredibly playful or if he figures he's lacking quite a bit of fiber in his diet. He may just be a space ball. But I'll keep buying socks and trying to hide them from his jaws of doom. But just because he eats everything in sight doesn't mean I want to get rid of my little trash compactor. He's just too darned cute.
