Hi:

Can you tell me the fair price to design a web page.

As I'm unfamiliar with the words, here's my rendition what is needed.

...A Web site
...Domain name
...13 sub sites with the Web
...addy for souls to write to you
...research arm

What would a designer charge?

Why is it that asking a question of the CM populous guarantees me knowledgeable responses from professionals...we are truly a great group of different professions...thanx...

It really depends on the ego of the designer.  I paid 3000 for www.PassionateSinsations.com to be built.
I've built pages in the past, but never carts so I paid up for the year.

You also have to take into consideration if you want them to maintain it?  Keep it on their servers?

Domain names come dirt cheap.  Building a site is easy.  Like I said it is just how complex you want it to be.
Currently I am enrolled in a class with the software my designer used.  The one I am designing for my final project will be so beyond my current site its ridiculous.

I got quotes up to 7 grand for one site when I was searching around.  If you want a total of 8...it may cost quite a bit.

Trust Me... it's NOT that expensive to have a good, professional site.

That's why I asked Her to email Me on the other side. :-)

Yep, Like I said the ego of the builder.  Mine I didn't know his ego.  However he was highly recommended.  He has proven to be much different than the recommendations.

Hence why I am taking the class.  Sooooo, know how to promote a site good?

aha promotion.  now there is a task.

many places that sell you a domain also have the pages to walk you thru building a page. it isnt that hard.

i heard $200-$300 but i personally would never pay that.

Promotion is easy.  It's getting web clients to decide what they want on their site that is nearly impossible.

If site-building isn't "that hard" then everyone would be doing it.  Besides, have you ever seen the code that some of those convoluted WYSIWYG editors spit out?  Yeah, the pages load, but the code is a disaster... more code = longer load times.  And yes, it is imperative to have the cleanest, most streamlined code possible.  Not everyone has broadband, and even if they do, it's nice to click on a link and have a page loaded in front of you before you have a chance to process the fact the screen changed.

The problem with running a hosting/design business is bandwidth costs money.  Servers cost money.  My time costs money.  If a person wants a site that looks like it was put together by a monkey and a five year-old, that's fine... If they want a professional website and don't want to deal with anything except trying to explain to Me what they want, then yeah, it's gonna cost them.  But not nearly as much as most other places charge.... why?  Because I'm here to help, not to get rich off it.  I think everyone should have a good-looking website that doesn't break them.

well- one has to decide the purpase- if the purpase is to make cash- then one must refrain from razzle dazzle that serve no purpose.

it is very hard to make cash off the Internet.

if you are good at promotion- then that is a HUGE +++++.    people are impatient and will click to the next site.

having a site can be like one of those vanity book publishers- yeah you can get it done- but it is a vanity thing.

i dont know alot about code.

to summarize- it is VERY HARD to make cash off the Internet. if someone found the answere they sure the heck aint going to give away their secrets.

i have seen fake bank sites look better then the real thing.

you are so right. not everone has DSL.....

It's quite easy making money online, actually.. and I do mean legitimately make money.  Just need a little know-how, a niche and a way to spread the word.

Most of the cost would be related to whether you want custom graphics and layout. There are tons of free e-commerce carts. You could just get OScommerce, installed. And you'd be looking at like 10.00 dollars for hosting a month, and whatever .coms run now, like 6.00 dollars for a year I believe. Of course that is without graphic changes, but anyone could read the documentation and figure that out in a day.

I had a crystaltech.com account, and it comes with zencart(variation of oscommerce). You just have to follow the point and click instructions for installing it. Takes about ten minutes, and then it's just changing graphics, and typing in your products.

If your just wanting a non-commerce site, then it entirely depends on the graphics work, you want. The actual coding would be miniscule, and standard. You could duplicate collarchat, for free, it appears to be a free message board script used by many sites, the name of it slips my mind though.

So, without knowing how customized you want it. The range is from 20.00 dollars to infinity. LOL.

I'd almost consider going to a local university's job department and put in a job offer there.  Senior design students may like it on their resume, and they'll almost certainly be willing to work for less than those with the full degree already in-hand.  Probably pretty well-versed in some of the newer methods and technologies, too.

Not sure how it'll work out, but it could be worth looking into if you may end up spending thousands otherwise.

Thank you instynctive - I totally agree. It takes a lot of work. The internet and change growth is so rapid you have to constantly be on your toes. It is fun though..and yes can be profitable.

Good luck to ALL!
