Sounds like you are talking about ring gags, Ive never used them because I dont find drooling a attractive thing but some people like them. Only thing I have heard about them is lots of drooling to be expected and you need to be careful about teeth .

There is that thing dentists use to keep your mouth open during a long stretch of work too. i'm not sure what it's called or where to get one though. edited to add Sorry, please don't mind me. i should have checked the link first.
