Steve Fossett Missing: Help find him by searching satellite imagery
Hope is fading for Steve Fossett. You might help to find missing Steve Fossett who probably crashed with his plane in Nevada.

http://mashable.com/2007/09/08/amazon-helps-in-search-for-steve-fossett/

It is important to find him quickly because he has very low water reserves. If found alive maybe one will be rewarded as he is a milliadaire. Steve took off from the Flying M Ranch (near Yerington, NV) approximately 130 kilometers from Reno in a single engine Citabria Super Decathlon for just a three hours flight, but did not come back. Steve Fossett was looking for lake beds suitable for land speed record attempt. When he failed to return to base by late afternoon the alarm was raised and the search was initiated. The aircraft's last confirmed position on Monday (3 September) at approximately 10:30 A.M. local time showed Steve west of Powell Canyon (south of Walker Lake and southwest of Hawthorne), proceeding east towards the canyon. This location is less than 30 miles SE from his point of departure / expected arrival. Searchers have been trying to find the plane somewhere in a 17,000-square-mile area filled with mountain ranges and desert plateaus. Although civil and military aircrafts and helicopters with infrared cameras had been sent out to search for him in this unfortunately very difficult area of Nevada (an immensely large area of 44.000 square-kilometers) where already hundreds of other small planes had crushed before and not been found,  they did not succeed to find him. And if it takes even longer he will most probably die.

Several organizations have pulled together satellite imagery of the suspected crash zone and are asking people to look over the images and search for the plane which will measure 30 pixel wingspan and 21 pixels in length. They are requesting people to search each 256X256 pixel square to make sure nothing is missed. Time is of th
e essence in this matter, and the faster people work, the better.

The search for Steve Fossett got some potent help from above and you might be able to help. DigitalGlobe, which supplies many of the images from space for Google Earth, has fresh imagery of the search area and that's enabled the activation of something called the Amazon Mechanical Turk
. Essentially, anyone with a computer can conduct a pixel-by-pixel search for Fossett. The site is self explanatory. The system is set up to allow masses of humans, able to differentiate objects (like airplane wreckage on a mountainside) and make judgment calls that computers don't do well.

You can use your Google Earth and eagle eyes to help out in the search for Steve Fossett. Go here to find out how you can help:

Please carefully review the instructions at the very bottom of this site before you start search in Google Earth http://earth.google.com/.
IMPORTANT: Please ensure that you've loaded the folowing KML file below in Google Earth before navigating to the co-ordinates. Otherwise, you risk looking at old and irrelevant sattelite images. For the relevant sattelite images first download the KML file which integrates then into Google Earth:
KML file for Google Earth Searching:

To view in Google Earth, load the KML file then cut and paste:

38.388290,-119.058151

in the "Fly To" box found at the top left corner of the application. For a similar viewing experience in Google Earth to the above image, navigate to an altitude of roughly 1,500 feet.

If you find something please contact the Nevace Civil Air Patrol or any other suitable authority.

Thank you.

Maybe thrill-seekers should carry satellite locators or something. I don't oppose what the guy does for fun, but isn't there a better way to prevent these kinds of disappearances?

If for some reason Steve Fossett does not survive this ordeal...I will dedicate the rest of my season to the life of this great adventurer...Cuz I roll like that.

From my understanding he was wearing a locating device of some sort. They also stated that you had to be severely hurt not to be able to activate it.

I hope he is alive of course, but it looks grim to me.

I have trouble believing that the guy *wouldn't* have an EPIRB in his ditch bag.

Therefore, no satellite call implies that he didn't survive any landing he might have made...

LOL
Humm roll is a bit played out now, DG.
We stopped saying rolling in the 90s.

In D.C. they say, "I get down like that or I don't get down like that" or the ever popular "I'm down with that!".

I love to say, "I don't get down like that".

By the way, I believe Steven has gone home to meet his maker, R.I.P.

As the aircrafts and helicopters had been searching for him mainly in the south-east of Yerington and the nearby lake because he said he would fly southwards and did not find him, maybe he has changed his mind and flew north which would have made more sense as he was looking for a big valley appropriate for testing racing cars,
could you please help to find him with GoogleEarth
in the opposite direction where they did not search for him yet in the north-west nearby Sparks, Reno, Pyramid lake ?
Thank you.
