Cut out fats, not all, but dont eat anything with over 10% fat in it, worked for me, lost nearly 2 stone in about 3 months!  Yes you can still eat everything, just read it before hand, I dont have butter, drink tea or coffee or fizzy drinks, I eat as much fruit and veg as I can, but I also find if I want a binge then I grab a no fat or low fat yogurt!  Yogurt is amazing, it fills the gap!

Good luck, just remember fat stays on you, the only good fats are omega 3 and 6, these in moderation of course...

I find pasta and a tom base sauce is a good filler!  Also rice, just read the fat content!  It worked for me!!!  I persona;lly do try not to eat processed foods...

popeye1250 -> RE: What works for you in losing weight? (9/15/2007 1:00:25 PM)

Excercise does it for me.
An hour on the treadmill @ 3.5 mph for 45 minutes to an hour 4 to 5 times a week and I lose about 4 pounds per month until I get down to my "ideal" weight of 209 lbs.
And, I like to ride my bike and walk either around the neighborhood or walking on the beach.
I hate dieting and have a wicked sweet tooth so I'd rather just lose weight through excercise and eat whatever I want.
Dieting sucks! Excercise instead.

Wildfleurs -> RE: What works for you in losing weight? (9/15/2007 1:27:56 PM)

Eating 1600 or less calories a day and working out at least four times a week with 30 minutes of heavy aerobic exercise, followed by weight lifting and stretching.   Oh and not 1600 calories of junk food, but mainly one lean protein, one small amount of starch and at least two veggies for each meal.

bottombob -> RE: What works for you in losing weight? (9/15/2007 3:34:15 PM)

LeMis -> RE: What works for you in losing weight? (9/15/2007 3:51:01 PM)

Start with water (start by replacing every other soda, juice, etc... with water, then eliminate more with water), many times we mistake thirst for hunger, when you feel hungry, try some water first.

Stay away from white flour, potatoes, rice & pasta, try substituting with brown rice, whole wheat flour or sweet ptatoes.
Instead of 3 meals a day, try more healthier & smaller meals throughout the day (no more than 6).

Park further away and do a bit more exercise.

windchymes -> RE: What works for you in losing weight? (9/15/2007 4:29:17 PM)

I tried that water thing, but I retain it all day and then I'm up 4-5 times a night peeing it out! [&:]

The South Beach way of eating is the healthiest i've come across and very easy to follow. I've followed it for almost 4 years now.  It was developed to help prevent heart disease and diabetes and the weight loss was a side effect.  It works by keeping your blood sugar levels even throughout the day which helps prevent sugar and starch cravings and also hunger.

MasterRobsalayna -> RE: What works for you in losing weight? (9/15/2007 5:07:27 PM)

This is certainly a subject right up alayna's alley!  Having been put on many "diets" since childhood, and spending literally thousands of dollars since "adulthood." alayna's experiience is thus:  AVOID the Gastric ByPass (had it in 2000, lost 110, regained half, losing again) but have major, major problems because of the surgery (yes, MANY are successful, and more power to them...smile.)  alayna's favorite is:  www.kaysheppard.com.  Well researched (you can ignore the food addict part if that isn't your issue).  Master has slave on Atkins but it's s l o w for this slave anyway, but probably due to health issues.  Working out at Curves 3x a week and walking 2x a day (when able) greatly reduces STRESS for alayna and helps the metabolism (which is all jacked up right now.)  slave is confident the weight loss will come (it's starting again).

For the person who said she retains the water she is drinking, check what you are eating as water, as weird as this sounds, is a natural diuretic.  Our cells will hold onto water for dear life if not getting enough but they are happy to release the water the more water you consume.  Tea and some fruits are also natural diuretics (and fruit is mostly water anyway.)  Yes, alayna is up all night, too, but does try to start cutting back on the water after working out and stops the tea usually at work.

The advice most have given is right on.  Those of us who are obese (in alayna's opinion anyway) are really experts at dieting and nutrition, some of us just have trouble doing what we know is best.  Consume as close to the natural product as you can and exercise.  By the way, there are 99 names for sugar, including the stuff in the packets.  The only artificial sweetener that does not react in your body as sugar is liquid saccharine (meaning artificial sweeteners cause insulin to be released which is really the issue in weight management).  So those diet soda's are really straight sugar, just minus the calories.

 Portion control,and exercise.

Also, don`t eat at least 4 hours before bedtime.

Don`t skip breakfast, and eat fruit for snacks/hunger moments.Have five or six small meals, rather than 2 or 3 big ones.

Starchy carbs(bread, crackers, spuds, etc) turn right into sugar.Cut down on them,or skip them altogether.

Have sex.

donnaamarie -> RE: What works for you in losing weight? (9/15/2007 6:15:10 PM)

hi,

I lost 140 pounds from July of 2005 to July of 2006 by following a low/carb, low/fat approach and exercising.  I have maintained that loss since then.

The bottom line though is not what you eat, but how much of it you eat.  One should not look at this as a quick fix to lose XX amount of pounds and go back to the way you ate before.  It's about being educated about your food and your intake, understanding your own body and realizing what made you fat in the first place.

I have basically said that I won't eat or consume anything that hasn't lived before.  If it had a mother or grew out of the ground, then it's fair game.

Good luck!

NeedToUseYou -> RE: What works for you in losing weight? (9/15/2007 6:47:49 PM)

The only thing I'd recommend is cutting all sodas out entirely. I did this once for about 3 months and lost about 25 lbs, and I didn't even switch to water, I drank sweetened tea!! Nothing else changed at all.

Soda, IMO,is worse than cigarettes as far as health goes. I actually smoke and guzzle soda, lol, quitting soda made me feel better than quitting smoking.

allyC -> RE: What works for you in losing weight? (9/15/2007 9:47:25 PM)

For me, it was 1200-1500 calories per day.  Lots of water.  No soda. No fast food (except subway and other healthful choices).  I did not eat 4 hours before bed.  Gradually I became more active.  I ate smaller meals more often if possible.  I learned what I could and could not order from various restaurants (Applebees, Macaroni Grill, etc.) and I really do enjoy the more health conscious menu items.  (From Applebees, they have a lovely steak with portobello, red potatoes, and broccoli or asparagus that is 400 calories total.). Something that helped me immensely was visualization.  At night, I would sort of drift off to sleep while thinking about things to come - for example how good it will feel to be on my Master's arm when I have slimmed down... or how it will feel to shop at a regular store or how interesting it would be to see people who haven't seen me in awhile.  Positive, fun, visualizations really helped to keep me motivated. I lost about 100 lbs, however I recently hit a HARD plateau.  I have since gone off the plan but will be hitting the ground running shortly as sometimes you have to "change it up" as the body becomes more and more accustomed to your eating/exercise routine.  When it does this, it tends to plateau harder and harder each time.  Sometimes going off and then back on an eating plan can help immensely. Good luck and well wishes, -Cav's ally

toss the word diet out the window and make lifetime changes - drink lots of water. Give up certain foods forever - like soda.  Exercise at least 30 minutes aerobically 4 times a week.  Make breakfast a priority. Eat 5 to 6 small meals rather than 3 big ones.  Don't eat after dinner.  Eliminate sugar and salt.  Think - for the rest of my life... not just till you reach your goal weight.

Exercise.  Being active. Building muscle.  Diets just don't work long-term.  Everytime you reduce your intake, or alter it, your body will eventually adapt to it and will work to fill those fat cells right back up, and then some.  Activity and burning calories is the only thing that will keep weight off permanently.

greetings winterlight,

quite honestly, accountability seems to be the only thing that has been working for me at the moment (logging all of my food intake and exercise). for whatever reason it has made a big difference over the last couple months. also, planning what i am eating and when, always eating at least three food groups, trying to eat at least once every four hours. and lately i have been giving up all liquids but water and milk with maybe juice or coke 1-2 times a week - basically when i am thirsty, only drinking water, as that's what i should be doing anyway (not using other drinks to quench thirst).

respectfully,
annabelle.

Find an exercise that dosent bore the fuck out of you, that was my big problem, soon as I found the benefits of sparring all the time though...well yipeee. If exercise is a chore to you, then your primed to fail.

Also, because I found other intrests they actually took my mind away from food and eating so much, hell sometimes I wont eat for a day if I find a game or outside activity that holds my attention.

Little or no carbs, plenty of fat and protein, have  your thyroid checked by someone that knows what they're doing.

Exercise is extremely good for you, but doesn't necessarily do jack for weight loss.

Buy and read a book called Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes, due out on the 25th of this month. It may very well be a paradigm-changer in the world of health/nutrition.

Additional good reading:

Over the past few weeks I’ve taken some heat in the comments section for my writing that weight loss or weight gain involves more than a simple accounting for calories. The entirety of mainstream medicine and nutrition believe that calories are the only thing that counts and that a low-carb diet is nothing more than a clever way to get people to cut calories. Weight loss on low-carb diets, so they say, occurs only because subjects following low-carb diets reduce their caloric intake. A calorie is a calorie is a calorie they say. But is it?

I could argue that this idea isn’t necessarily true because of a number of recent studies that have shown that subjects following low-carb diets actually lose more weight than their counterparts on low-fat, high carb diets despite the fact that the low-carbers consumed considerably more calories. But instead of going through these modern day studies, let’s go back and look at a couple of earlier famous studies to see what we can learn.
