AVOID the Gastric ByPass (had it in 2000, lost 110, regained half, losing again) but have major, major problems because of the surgery (yes, MANY are successful, and more power to them

For some, gastric by pass works, although "I believe" that the particular type and specifics of the surgery as well as the surgeon and the post-op vitamin & minerals being supplemented, regular lab work, protein, exercise can aid in the surgery being more successful in some than in others.

The surgeries & information have changed drastically since 2000, so sorry that you are experiencing major problems.  Hugs.

Do you participate in support groups (online or in real life)?  Have you seen a specialist to see if your problems can be fixed?  Yahoo has a group called "Graduate-OSSG", some of the members have had their original surgeries revised and are quite successful and are long term (7 years to 13 years +).  Much helpful advice and tips as well.

Little or no carbs, plenty of fat and protein, have  your thyroid checked by someone that knows what they're doing.

Exercise is extremely good for you, but doesn't necessarily do jack for weight loss.

Buy and read a book called Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes, due out on the 25th of this month. It may very well be a paradigm-changer in the world of health/nutrition.

There are good carbs and bad carbs, good fats and bad fats as well as good calories and bad calories, finding out which and what works for you personally is the key, exercise DOES help weight loss, they go hand in hand (in my opinion).

Good Luck.

Hmm, "good" carbs.........

If you are not insulin-resistant or diabetic, I agree, you get good antioxidants and such from fruit, but beyond that, there are no good carbs, to my way of thinking.

And yes, there are bad fats, like trans-fats, or any good fat that has been heated too much, causing oxidation.

Exercise can help some, as regards weight-loss, and it depends (like much of anything) on the individual as to how much.

Greetings,

I just wanted to state that this is a very interesting topic.  I have recently been remotivated to get my behind in gear!  I wanted to say congrats to everyone who has been successful in moving towards their goals, i think its amazing and while i may be envious now lol i am hoping to join you all in success by years end.    Keep up the great work, and thank you for sharing your stories and understandings of what works for you as knowledge in this is what helps.

Tony Robbins once said something along the lines of its not what you know, its doing what you know.  And to me in this kind of concept, thats what matters -- doing what you know works -- so congrats again.

"Good carbs" according to the South Beach plan include: almost all veggies, low sugar fruits, sweet potatoes, most beans, and whole grains.  You still have to watch your quantities though.

I have lost 41 lbs so far but i am stuck. Yes, i stopped regular soda. Once in a while i drink a diet soda (YUCK!). I drink water. Somedays i get only 8 ozs. in me. Some days i get 8 glasses into me. Depends on how busy i am. I am a food-a-holic, compulusive eater. I eat when sad, hungry, not hungry, tired, you name it fill in the blank ________.
i am contemplating going the Optifast route which is liquid diet for 20 weeks straight. No eating of any kind! I will be under Dr. supervision. Blood work every 1 1/2 weeks. I hear from many though that people are gaining it back after they go off of it. I have no idea statistically how many re-gain.
I have been through a lot of diets, the original liquid diet, richard *******, tried medifast for a day it drove me nuts, weight watchers etc. U get the idea.
It is hard to lose the weight. Now i read that people exposed to DES in utero have a weight problem..It is enough to drive one nuts and also i must add this is a
multi billion industry..as we all well know...

thanks for the input!!

Yes, and that's where I and the good doctor part ways, re: beans, grains, and sweet potatoes.

That, and the altered-fat cheeses/spreads.

And statins.
