SO I have been smelling what I thought was gas in my apartment for like, 2 days. I panicked today and called the fire department.

What is it that I smell...

But paint fumes drying in the 90+ degree heat. The fire department looked at me like I was nuts. It was awful. I am normally not one to get embarassed but I am mortified.

Ahhhhhhhhh! oh well. Better safe than sorry I guess. I really couldn't tell. It smelled like gas to me!!!!!

Might I add, so that I am not taken as a TOTAL dumbass, that I wasn't painting my apartment. It was outside.

You did the right thing, fourpeas. I'm really suprised that they looked at you funny. Usually they will be the first to tell you not to take chances. I hope if you smell something again, you will make that call again! Besides...if Bill Clinton can hold his head up high after being the butt of every late night talk show for months on end, surely you can get over this little incident...right? [;)]

Hey, better safe than sorry is right. I would rather call them or the gas company and have them check it out than flick a light switch and find out the hard way there is a gas leak. You did good girl.

I used to work for a propane company as a service technician and I would go on gas leak calls all the time. I have seen "leaks" that have been anything from dead mice to rotting fruit and every time when the homeowner would get embarrassed or apologize for calling I would assure them that they did the right thing. In my training, I have seen gas leaks that ended badly... it's not a pretty sight believe me. It is best to err on the side of caution.

You did the right thing. A suggestion for you though and it is something I would do for our customers I would call the gas company and ask them to send a pamphlet with a scratch and sniff sample of the odorant in the gas, just to affirm the smell of a true leak.

Go ahead and be a bit a bit embarassed, fourpeas, but also feel better for having been careful about something that might have been very significant.

You remind me of something told to me by my previous sub/g'friend.

After owning a dog for several years she decided her dog needed a friend, and got a second dog.
The second dog was the first male dog she had ever owned.
After a few weeks she noticed something she had never seen before, and it caused her enough concern that she hurried him to the vet.
The vet listend to her explaination, took one look at the dog, and his penis that had had "some white fluid leaking out of it", and told her (in a streight voice), "Guy dogs do that every now and then, when they get excited". <bg>

Now my sub/friend was mortified that she had focused on the possible medical possibilities, and didn't even consider what is a pretty common thing for guys. And it makes a funny story, but as I told her, it also showed how careful she was in caring for those cute critters and made me like her even more.

I think you did the right thing in ascertaining it was not Gas.
Besides that, were the responders cute?[;)] M

LOL that's better than the story of a friend who was horrified that a male and female cat had mated because they were a brother and sister from another litter.
