Now I know a LOT of you guys have little critters, and since my owner didn't particularly care for my idea of taking the door of the closet near the garage door and giving the cat her own little area for her box...nor did he care for the idea of cutting a kitty door in said closet door, I'm humbly asking for some ideas.

The problem is, Master gave me an adorable little husky who has outgrown sleeping on the bed all day. The only "safe" room for her right now until she is fully housebroken is the mud room. That room also happens to be kittycat alley, and where we have always kept the cat box. Right now, Mia has to jump up onto the ledge to eat her food, and then climb onto the water softener tower to use the litterbox. This really won't work long term, although she doesn't seem to mind. Any suggestions?

I thought maybe getting one of the automatic cleaning litterboxes that is enclosed and cleans itself everytime she goes might be the answer, but I've read differing reviews of them. Surely I'm not the only person who has been in the position of trying to figure out a place for the litterbox? Please, please help!!!!

best regards,
fate

As long as you only have one kitty I recommend the self cleaning litterboxes. Also as long as you have smaller piles.
Once you get more than one cat...or a larger pile the little metal rake cannot rake it....and the box basically is worthless.
Our cats loved our expensive little litter boxes...so much one sat on the edge, the edge that was supposed to lift up and drag the debris in it. Sitting on it...well you can see what I'm saying.
Anyway, they would manufacture poop just so they could take turns going....sometimes two at a time.
The poor little box could'nt handle it no more. So, 200 sitting on the patio going to waste.

Aside from my box experience I'm of no other help with your problem.

Gloria, the automatic box sounds perfect for her. Her piles are quite dainty and ladylike...lol. I did want to ask...are they constructed so that a dog wouldn't be able to get into it? If she can still get in enough to dig in it, it isn't going to solve my problem. Also, some of the reviews I read mention their cats were afraid to use this particular box because of the noise it made when it cleans. Apparently that wasn't your experience, though.

Thanks to each of you for the advice.

Stormsfate, seems your suffering from the Husky assuming those are tasty tid bits made especially for him. For now, try using one of the regular boxes with the lid and turning the opening closer to the wall. Temp fix for now.

Actually, that's what I'm trying to preempt. That's a great idea as well. I'm just wondering if she wouldn't nose her way into anyway, or turn it around. She's quite rambunctious.

They are open boxes. Not the covered ones. You can set it for every ten minutes to once every thirty minutes.

Doesn't make "alot" of noise but it does make noise. I think they may tell you that because the rake does move on its own. Although if she is like our cats and inquisitive she may sit her fat butt on it as well so the door cannot open.

Cats like moving parts...

It is about the size of a normal box inside. Has a clear liner you have to keep clean. Put the kitty litter over it..and a small metal rake.
Essentially it moves the rake over the kitty litter a few times and pushes it up into the receptacle.
It is larger than most because it has a huge cover that goes over it....yet the inside is of the average size.

I'd definately try the covered box for now. Although, the vet says the poop will not harm the dog.
Apparently dogs like cat poop because cats are carnivores and rarely chew up all of their food. So it passes through undigested. The dog gets protein out of the poop.
We have a puppy that just turned a year old yesterday...its been quite a year with him..the cats and the boxes.
Now he buries his chewies in the cat boxes...its always a joy.

Ummm. Whatever possessed people to think that dogs have any interest in cat crap? lol. I have never had that problem with My animals. Actually the dogs never went within fifty feet of the cat box.

I am sure you will be fine no matter which route you choose. There is nothing wrong with setting the cat box on higher ground though. Kitties are quite adept at making their ways to unruly heights.

Its actually a very common problem and that's probably what possesses people to think it may happen...lol. You guys have all given some terrific advice. Thank you very much. I actually ran across an article on About.com that had many of the suggestions you gave me. Here's the link if anyone else is interested, or in case SK wants to verify that I'm not the only idiot with this problem

<giggling> Why don't you come visit and let her lick *your* face??? Actually, it is funny and if I weren't having to deal with it, I'd be laughing hysterically at this thread.

The way we've worked it in the past is to create a cat-door into the room that has the kitty box. We just made a catflap big enough for the cat, and then leave the door to the litter-box room closed.

Probably not as effective if you don't want ot cut a hole in the door though.

I came home from the library today proclaiming myself a genius because I had thought of the idea to use that closet that is behind the door to the garage. No one sees it on the way in and on the way out, it can only be seen for the instant between turning the corner and then going out the garage door. The look on my owner's face was priceless though...lol.

i got a plastic/Tupperware container roughly the size of a large litterbox and cut a cat-sized hole in the top. The dog's head is too big to fit and the "treats" are down too far to reach. A bungy will keep the whole affair closed if the dog is really determined. It's also inexpensive, and reduces dust and litter all over.

I have a husky chow mix she is very pretty but boy a handful very hyper. About 9 months old.We have to keep her outside. Mostly because she couldnt learn to tell us she needed to go out and I got sick of cleaning up the mess.I should put a pic of her on here she has I think a fox face. anyhow cats dont mind walking on ledges to get to food and water my cat drinks out of the fish bowl so that means he is on the ledge of the fish tank kinda funny to watch. If you let you cat outside they can easily learn to use potty outside otherwise if the cat dosent mind I wouldnt worry about it.

I have one of those automatic littler boxesv(littermate). My cats LOVE it. When they hear it start to clean they come from where ever they might have been and watch their poo be scooped away. They aren't afraid of it at all. Its entertainment for them I guess. It does get stuck every so often because they use it so much, but up until recently it hasn't been a problem whatsoever. Just remember that it does need cleaninig because i tend to forget and a few days later, its overfull. i keep my litterbox in the half bath downstairs, i dont use it much and its in an area where i'll remember it and i only keep it opened enough for the cats to go in. i don't have dogs so i don't know if they would get into it. i hope i helped somewhat.

If you follow this link it will show you an ad for a kit to train your kitty to use the toilet. Might eliminate the kitty box altogether. May not solve your problem if your dog enjoys water from the bowl. Just a thought.
