imtempting -> Is it self advertising? (7/19/2005 7:46:02 AM)

Do you think it is people just doing self advertising when they have a topic like.

Why does noone want me? Or Is this good? etc etc

It really annoys as I think it is just to self advertise.

Faramir -> RE: Is it self advertising? (7/19/2005 7:48:42 AM)

The reason I come to places like this is primarly for the delicious, abundant dramatic irony on display.

Gemeni -> RE: Is it self advertising? (7/19/2005 8:02:27 AM)

It's common enough.

I really should just learn to ignore this sort of thing. After all, when you cater to either a whiner,or someone who browbeats them for whining, one simply contributes to the viscious cycle of attention mongering.

But you make a good point. I think I will school myself to stop being the sort of idiot who thinks that being critical and puffing up to show how much *better* I am than the one being criticized is. After all,it proves nothing-except that one has a tendency to behave like an out of control ass.

And it really points to a rampant insecurity-or there would be no need to indulge in it.

Let me put it this way. If one feels an inherent NEED to tear others down to stroke one's own ego-it says something about that person. And what it says is not attractive.

The opposite of love is not hate-it is indifference.

Thanks,nice topic starter.

I tried to implement a system that anyone who wanted to complain about others not acting like they wanted them to act would have to pay me 5 dollars, but for some reason that didn't work.

Gemeni -> RE: Is it self advertising? (7/19/2005 8:19:06 AM)

I know,it never does work.

It does make me laugh when people try to browbeat others into submission to thier ideas however. I guess emotional masochism is considered to be a fine sport to these sorts. I'd rather say my piece and just let it go-I don't need to defend myself.

But I guess that when "winning is everything" They just can't let it go............

It brings to light an amusing anaology however. I've heard that there is a way that people catch monkeys. They take a jar with a heavy handle attached, and tie it to a tree. It's clear, and has a nut inside. Little monkeys see the nut and go after it. Now the mouth of the jar is just large enough for the monkey to get it's hand in. And just big enough where the nut is,to grab it. However, the money cannot remove it's hand with the nut grasped in it.

Now if the monkey was not so stubborn about wanting that nut-it could let go,and easily escape the trap. But as it is,many moneys are taken by hunters with this trap. They let go of the nut when the hunter bonks them over the head.

Ever get the idea that we have a lot of this sort of stubborn monkey hanging around?[:D]

In some instances I think it is calculated to gain attention. In others, though, I think it's based on insecurity and in a few, I think you get a feel that this is simply someone so inexperienced that they need outside validation that what they're expierencing is within the range of acceptability. I don't see any great harm in weighing in with my personal opinion although I do tend to get bored with the attention sluts and drama addicts.

That's how they used to trap coons, put something shiny in a hole.

I think the behavior is more akin to continuing to try and open a door when it electrifies you.

darkinshadows -> RE: Is it self advertising? (7/19/2005 8:24:34 AM)

Hmm... I was thinking the same...

Peace and Love

Gemeni -> RE: Is it self advertising? (7/19/2005 8:29:44 AM)

Yes Emerald.

Or continue to quote and berate someone who has told you they have you on ignore.

DUH.

Jasmyn -> RE: Is it self advertising? (7/19/2005 8:43:19 AM)

lol

Gemeni -> RE: Is it self advertising? (7/19/2005 9:16:21 AM)

Yup Emerald.

Or the old Viking game of seeing who can run into the wall the hardest to prove how macho they are.

The wall is indifferent too.[:D]

Kinkypupper -> RE: Is it self advertising? (7/19/2005 9:33:14 AM)

No i do not thing its "self-advertising" but more a plea for support and that they need to hear they are not the only ones out here that are still "Seeking" Am sure everyone gets a tad depressed about it occasionally.

i suppose it could be..
but arent we all a bit guilty of self advertising? i mean simply having a profile up is self advertising to a degree isn't it? Ehh just my two cents

LadyAngelika -> RE: Is it self advertising? (7/19/2005 4:30:56 PM)

Well said dechala.

Though I think there could be a distinction made between creating a positive image and a negative image. I can be self-promoting at times (which, in my opinion, is absolutely not a bad thing) but in doing so, I usually put my best foot forward.

I think that what imtempting is talking about are those that go for the "help me" or "pity" factor. Maybe I misunderstood the question...

But actually, some girlfriends and I were talking about this at brunch on Sunday. We were talking about how some people seem to have to create a little extra drama in their lives so that the world can revolve around them. Meanwhile, there are often people around them going through ordeals that most would consider much more severe but they carry on with dignity and tact. Some people really need to make it all about them all the time.

See my dirty laundry is in my hamper and only people sharing close quarters with me ever see it. Some people however hang their dirty laundry up and air it out and foul odours are bound to attract attention.

Just remember that Misery draws company.

Though I'm not one to play the pitty card and go Wo is me, there are times when I do get frustrated like anyone else and would just like to reach out and talk with someone to get the feelings out. Holding in your emotions isn't always a good idea.

Everyone get's a distressed look on them from time to time.

FangsNfeet -> RE: Is it self advertising? (7/19/2005 9:44:06 PM)

LOL I'm a big fan of Far Side. I'm glad we both have this in common. For lent one time I vowed to always walk in the Out Doors of stores and out the In Doors. It can be tougher than you think and some say that I was just advertising that I'm a weirdo or a wanna be different from everyone else weirdo.

Being the DIFFERENT Person is one thing that I've seen many advertise themselves to be.

mossy -> RE: Is it self advertising? (7/20/2005 10:54:13 AM)

[&:] imtempting it's a good topic thank you. i'm not exactly sure what brought you to this topic, but i have been thinking of it since yestersay myself. I am fairly new to the site here, but your question caught my attention.

I sat and read most of the posts, why are we all here? Isn't it self advertising? You want to meet someone. If you don't want to listen to people asking these questions, then you would be locked in a room, and you wouldn't be online. There is a need to connect, to be accepted...some people don't know why they are not accepted, or picked to be someone special.

Think of it when looking for a job...if you were to go on an interview, and be rejected for the position, did you ever ask someone, why didn't I get it? What did the other guy have that I didn't? I believe it is more of that sort of thing most of the time. Then again, there are those people who are just very dramatic...and love the drama of life. They are the ones that continually need the attention of someone reassuring them they are good enough. Make every effort to sort it out before condemning them. You might find the perfect mate, or slave, or sub in one of the real people trying to find those answers.

I hope this makes sense to some of you out there...it is just my opinion to the posted question. I am just trying something new here, I am not one for the chatrooms, or message boards, but I am trying to become more involved in the site here.

Let me know if you feel the same or differently about what I just posted. I look forward to reading it.
