cyberdude611 -> US refuses Iran president's request to vist ground zero (9/19/2007 7:55:54 PM)

By PAT MILTON, Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad asked permission to lay a wreath at the World Trade Center site when he comes to New York City next week, but the request was denied, a police official said Wednesday.

The U.S. also has denied a visa to Iran's United Nations ambassador in Geneva to attend next week's General Assembly meeting because he was involved in the 1979 U.S. hostage crisis, a U.N. official said.

Ahmadinejad, who is arriving Sunday to address the United Nations' General Assembly, had asked this month for permission to visit the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, police spokesman Paul Browne said.

The request to enter the fenced-in site was rejected because of ongoing construction there, Browne said.

"Requests for the Iranian president to visit the immediate area would also be opposed by the NYPD on security grounds," Browne said.
The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Zalmay Khalilzad, told reporters Wednesday that the United States would not support Iran's attempt to use the site for a "photo op."

"Iran can demonstrate its seriousness about concern with regard to terrorism by taking concrete actions," such as dropping support for Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and suspending their uranium enrichment program, Khalilzad said.

Well I have to fully agree with the decision to not allow him his photo op - and the reasons for it (that is indeed what it appears to me, to be - a "Photo op" for him only).

IMO, It is almost insulting he asked for this, and amazing if he actually expected this request to be granted, given his current behavior re: Nuclear weapons materials and testing, and the recent, constant game-playing on Iran's part, in reference to agreeing to halt probable production of them, etc. Then again, he has never appeared to me to have much contact with reality.

I am not  a fan in any way of this Iranian President - he strikes me as a real "piece of work".

I can only imagine the diplomatic challenges that await the next U.S. President, in trying to keep this Nut-job at bay.

Replace "work" with a different four-letter word, and you have my impression of him......

Jerk? Yeah, that is my impression, too.

Noooo....... that isn't the one I was thinking of....... [:D]

Oh. What then? I know it must be bad. You don't have to spell it using all the letters....

I can't wait for the 'Meatcleaver and friends", response to this one. [;)]

This might get interesting....

Apparently Ahmadinejad says he is going to visit ground zero anyway despite the rejection.

I say let him visit by all means.  Just do 2 things 1st.  1 Let the people of New York know when he will be there.  2  let the NYPD have the morning off in that part of  town.  Everything will work its self out from there.

I can't see what all the fuss is about, the Iranians didn't plan and execute 9/11, Saudi citizens did and I notice the US doesn't seem to have a problem with them. The US's attitude to Iran is the same petty attitude it has had against Cuba for the last 40 years, it is childish and self defeating and just makes the US look like a spoilt kid that wants to take his ball home.

As for the US's (and the west's) objection to Iran having nukes, it would have been better if the west had taken a similar attitude towards Israel years ago and maybe to India and Pakistan. The truth is that no country is going to take a lecture from the US  about nukes when they know nukes is the only sure way of preventing US aggression. If Iraq had nukes, it wouldn't be occupied now and any 12 year old kid can see that.

I hope I didn't disappoint you caitlyn.[:D]

DomKen -> RE: US refuses Iran president's request to vist ground zero (9/20/2007 8:19:35 AM)

However the Iranian president has claimed the 9/11 attacks weren't the works of al quaida but has instead blamed Israel. He should not be allowed to defile the site with his hate and lies.

I also note the lack of concern for the second fact in the OP's post. A kidnapper, or special forces black op, is now the Iranian ambassador to the UN in Geneva. A man that violated diplomatic immunity now sleeps in Geneva safe from US prosecution due to diplomatice immunity. The swiss should eject him and all his fellow "students" should know that setting foot outside Iran means finally meeting justice in a US court.

What about the hate and lies of the US that has caused so much death and misery in the middle east?

And the US doesn't go round kidnapping people?

pot-kettle-black and all that.

DomKen -> RE: US refuses Iran president's request to vist ground zero (9/20/2007 8:36:42 AM)

I don't care where Ahmadinejad tells his lies as long as it isn't at the site. I would oppose just as strongly the POTUS traveling to another country and speaking at a similiar site with similiar intentions.

As to kidnapping, have we violated diplomatic immunity? I've never heard of such an incident and if we do why isn't the PoS in question languishing at an undisclosed location?

The difference is that the Saudis are not (at least not publically) calling for the destruction of Israel.

And Ahmadinijad is a nut. Plain and simple. This is a guy that continues to think the Holocaust is a jewish conspiracy.

Well there are about 20 CIA agents wanted on charges of kidnapping in Germany and Italy.

I'm not going to bore you with quotations from Israeli leaders that show them out to be racist murdering thugs. (like Ahmadinijad, in words only but Israel is a US client so that doesn't matter)

As for Ahamadinijad, if he is a nut, Bush is way beyond being a nut, he's lost in the twilight zone. Wrong enemy, wrong country, wrong war etc. etc.

You dont need a CIA conspiracy to knock off Amadinejad. Here in the US there are a number of Iranian-Americans that are very pissed off at this man and would love nothing more than take a shot at him.

I'm sure there are Americans enough in America that are so pissed off with Bush that they would love to take a shot at him.

Every country has its desenters that would take a shot at their leader if they could.
