If you are willing to lose your licence or your employers licence for them so be it, your choice.
I wouldnt employ you to work in my pub in that case as it would be my livelihood you would be messing with.

Why would there be a risk of losing a liquor licence, do you not think most people can tell if a man with grey hair, walking stick and obvious ageing of the skin is likely to be over eighteen?

Your pub,do you hold a policy of regularly ID checking all new commers that visit your establishment regardless of how old they look and for that matter,do you know the ages of your regulars,have they been checked?

As i said before there is a possibility that the place the gentleman attempted to purchase alcohol from had had conditions applied to their licence. One of those conditions is that you must id everyone who attempts to purchase alcohol. Failure to do so would result in loss of licence.
I am probably over board when it comes to checking ids and yes i do know most of my regs are over 18, those i havent checked are obviously by sight over the age of 18. I do not have conditions on my licence so that is just fine for me to do. Should i have conditions applied for any reason yes i would id everyone who walked through my door.

............. those i havent checked are obviously by sight over the age of 18.]

.............Yet I would'nt be employed for applying those very same principles.

If the establishment mentioned in the original post did have this restriction applied to them for past peccadillos,do you think it would be fair that the check out staff or indeed the manager should point this out to all customers by saying 'ID will be asked for in all cases',a notice perhaps?

If i had conditions on my licence which stated i had to id everyone no i would not employ someone not willing to do this.

*shrugs* yeah maybe.

Supermarket staff refused to sell alcohol to a white-haired 72-year-old man - because he would not confirm he was over 21.

I've seen laws stating (here in Virginia, at least) that one can't purchase alcohol without a valid ID.  So, they're following the law.

Those clerks get minimum wage.  Many are not going to take a chance of being arrested in a sting or when an officer just happens to observe it by breaking the law out of convinence.

Sharing a snakebite with your mates in the park you would not notice challenge 21. Going to a shop, pub etc you would. Are you blind man? [:D]

Surely one would notice challenge 21 while buying the ingredients for Snakebite, and be blind after drinking a bucket of it, or at least comotose ?  [8D]

Actually completely irrelevant but most pubs do not serve snakebite anymore as it is seen as promoting irresponsible drinking.

In the case of liquor license holders, I do understand their position, but I do feel common sense can be applied, if someone looks young,then by all means ask for proof of age, I would, but a grey haired old man, obviously looking old, then I will use my better judgement.

If there were restrictions in place,then by all means obtain proof of age,but common sense should prevail where there is not .

Sure, but it doesnt always.

FYIinFL -> RE: .man refused alcohol. (9/20/2007 3:58:17 PM)

I was carded this past weekend, I was like "WTF"?
It was a local place (less than 5 minutes away), the lady told me when I returned from my vehicle that there were rumors going around that the cops were checking to see if everyone had ID on them that weekend.

I was drinking bottled water.  [8|]

missturbation -> RE: .man refused alcohol. (9/20/2007 4:01:12 PM)

Technically over here if you are under age you need to be accompanied by someone over 18 whether you are drinking alcohol or not.

Politesub53 -> RE: .man refused alcohol. (9/20/2007 4:24:35 PM)

Its always odd they wont serve snakebite, but will gladly give you a pint of cider and a pint of lager.

I`m always getting asked if i`m over 21....i think its the blue eyes..[;)]

That or the assistants been on snakebite..... !

The licencing authority can put conditions on your licence to sell alcohol if you have broken licencing rules.
For example this store may have had a history of selling alcohol to under 21's so the licencing authority has put a condition on their licence saying anyone purchasing alcohol has to provide id.
If they fail to do this they could lose their licence altogether.
As a licensee myself, better you lose one mans trade than all your trade on alcohol.

I gotta agree with this. It's the law. It's nice if they don't check your ID because you look over 21 but if they choose not to, that is their call. If you refuse to show ID and they choose not to sell you booze, that is your own problem. Go somewhere where they will look at you, realize you are over 21 and not bother with your ID.

No its not odd, its called showing due diligence. If you serve a pint of lager and of cider and the customer goes away from the bar to mix them then it is no longer our responsibility. If we mix them and you get involved in a fight etc we could be held responsible for promoting irresponsible drinking.

slaverosebeauty -> RE: .man refused alcohol. (9/20/2007 9:00:50 PM)

Locally I see signs that say 'We Card Anyone Under 40.' I don't drink, so it doesn't really apply to me, but I have seen some clerks at different places ID everyone, its up to the store or the resturant around here as far as I know. One resturant I went too they carded EVERYONE at the table, even the adults who were not drinking, just to be sure; no one minded, and a few of the ladies got a kick out of being asked for ID.

Then again, I am one of the few who wants to see the legal drinking age RAISED to 25. {ducks as others have a fit}

domiguy -> RE: .man refused alcohol. (9/20/2007 9:11:21 PM)

I would like to see the drinking age raised to 25...and the age that the women of CM are allowed to give birth be around 40.

Termyn8or -> RE: .man refused alcohol. (9/21/2007 8:21:25 AM)

That happened to a friend of mine when he was about 40. His GF was sitting in the car and he said "Hold on", went out and got her and said to the clerk "Say that again".

He was full of himself for days.

What gets me though is the ID required for so many other things. I went to get an ink cartridge for the printer and tried to use a credit card. I didn't have a picture ID so I couldn't. Now come on, if I had stolen the CC I would not be buying an ink cartridge, I would be buying the whole store.

And then even if you pay cash, alot of places require an ID for a refund.

Fact is, some places require it, period. If for beer it might be company policy or a restriction by the government. For a CC, they pay a lower rate if they require ID sometimes. I can see it at places that sell pricey items, music stores, certain other things, but when the corner store or a gas station does it, I think it is ridiculous.
