The term "neo-con" was once described as someone "liberal that had been mugged by reality", keeping in mind that the American usage of "liberal" is different than the original, European one. So, we can say a neo-con is someone that was once a leftist, but has changed their mind and become more conservative.

Speaking for myself, I think it was more a case of realizing, years ago, that leftism was not without its flaws. I'm not at all sure I became "more" conservative, as I have always had conservative beliefs, and still have liberal and leftist ones, as well.

From my limited understanding:

The term neo-conservative was a reaction to Realpolitik; that is, a reaction to Henry Kissenger and associates' brand of US foreign policy.

The neo-conservatives (1970s) believed this was wrong, and that US foreign policy should be aimed at helping people around the world i.e. helping in the eyes of the US government, which amounts to attempting to install market democracy in foreign nations in the belief that this is the only way to live life. Reagan employed some of the neo-conservatives of the 1970s, and built their foreign policy around this ideal i.e. the US knows best, and it follows that the US government must invade places like Nicaragua to show them the light.

At his/her core, a neo-conservative believes that he/she is right, and his/her one true answer is underpinned by market democracy and Christian morals.

Left or right isn't the common denominator, these people believe they are right, and are so righteous that they will use violence to install their ideas and expect people to thank them for it later because they know best: same as the Bolsheviks.

P.S. Liberalism and neo-conservatism are not remotely alike; liberalism is underpinned by individual sovereignty, regardless of nationality, race, religion etc, unlike neo-conservatism which is a case of "we'll show you how it's going to be".

Exactly Northern Gent. You hit the nail on the head. The same as Bolsheviks.Left and right issues are not what motivate the neo-con.It`s greed, nationalism and righteousness, that make a neo-con tick. They know what`s best, and fuck anyone else who says different.

The boneheads who follow them aren`t really neo-cons,but rather the dupes of the neo-conservatives,who swallowed the bullshit.

The first time I ever heard the term ''neocon'' formally spoken within the mainstream, was out of Pat Buchananan’s mouth back in 1999 during an interview on CNN. He defined the term as a ''nuanced, more liberal form of conservatism'' - Meaning ''New Republican''

The roots of the neo-conservative movement are firmly grounded from within the traditional Democratic Party that partly ties into what's known as '' The Southern Stategy''

One of the hallmarks of today’s ''New Republican'' philosophy, is the narrow scope /use of the ''good book'' via evangelical religion as a means of disseminating myths that keep the general population in clueless servitude.

The ultimate hypocrisy of the neocons and their ''Straussian'' philosophy is the deceitful ploy that uses/manipulates the laws as spoken by the Christian God as a means to control, when in fact they don’t believe in the Christian God themselves.

As I’ve mentioned previously….the best read out there about neo-conservatism, is a book called ‘’Rise of The Vulcans’’ by James Mann. Mann chronicles both the origins and rise of the neocon ranks and the philosophy behind it. It was a great book that I could not put down.

As far as myself – I’m fiscal conservative at the extreme end of the scale, with social libertarian leanings that mix liberalism with anarchy [;)]

I used to be a libertarian with a strong conservative bent. Growing up in Arizona, one of my main political heroes was Barry Goldwater.

I've strayed increasingly leftwards as I've gotten older.

And I have been mugged.

hahahaha well...I used to be pro-Pinochet, however never a neo-con. Now I am more liberal but dislike either the democrats and the republicans, so I take what I like from both, more like the conservatives of old.
