I got a brief Yahoo message from the person who introduced me to this board.

She sent me a link, and when asked, she said she was sharing pictures with me.

So I visit the link, and it appears to be Yahoo's Flickr sign in page.

So I sign in, and get taken to a hacker's page.

Sure enough, I was ripped off for my yahoo password. Next time I tried to sign on, I was blocked because this 'friend' had changed the password.

Fortunately Yahoo stores enough secondary information I was able to confirm my identity and regain control of the account.

Now I have to warn those whose contact information is stored in my address book.

So be forewarned.

This is sadly an ongoing issue. Your friend probably had no idea that the message had been sent to you. I had it happen to me recently and knew nothing of the messages that were being sent out in my name until my Father rang me and asked what the pictures were that I had sent him a link to (he is in his 70s and always checks with myself or Master before doing anything unusual on his pc). That is the only point that I knew I had been sent a virus.

I always think it is sad that the, obviously very clever, people that write these things do not spend more time on creating things that are useful and a benefit to people.

Identity theft seems to be a sad fact of modern life; these scam artists don't care at all about the damage they do to people's ability to trust others and reach out, online or offline.  Every interaction has to be carefully screened and measured -- what a way to live.

Even worse, to my mind, are malicious malware authors.  I can wrap my head around identity theft -- it's a scam for cash or something similar, usually, but those individuals who use their talents in computing to essentially vandalize and destroy for what seems to be no sane reason other than their own twisted amusement... well, what can one say about that kind of thing, really?

Bobkgin, I hope that you don't suffer any further harm from this malicious turn of events.  All the best.

Norarc: Thank you. I'm still here (and on Yahoo) and I'm running my anti-virus software now to see if anything bad happened. No firewall warnings so hopefully all is well.

Susie: Thank you for reminding me of something I knew but had forgotten. Yes, it is quite possible my friend lost her account to the same individual who struck at me. I should have thought of that.

Fortunately I do not archive messenger conversations, so a degree of privacy was maintained. And I've warned my friends, so we'll see.

This is why I don't have any financial information on my computer.
When I pay my bills I write out checks.
If I have any questions I just go down to the bank.
I have a broker for my stock account who's only a phone call away.

I'm not a hacker and don't know the correct terminology but I do recall working in a large company that was hit with a virus.  It replicated itself by stealing information from the recipients address book and sending out more emails from those addresses.  How that works, I've no idea but I do recall we were down for the entire day because of that virus.  This company was a well known global organization and was no slacker when it came to firewalls and safeguards.  Being down on such a large scale was a complete nuisance - not to mention the blow to productivity.  Anyway, I think it not only a good chance, but highly probable that your friend was an innocent victim of the virus.  Same as yourself.  Sorry to hear it happened and hope you don't suffer from repercussions of the violation.  Sad when you can be violated without consent, but hey; Light up a post coitus fag and keep testing for any virtual STD's.

Kind of feeling like a "lost female" here at the moment.  Was your response to me?   You are a doll, but Fag Hag isn't on my resume :)

Seriously though, your response really has me baffled.

Before I get roasted by those taking offense to the fag hag statement!

That's what my friends who are gay call women who chase after gay men.  I didn't invent the phrase and it was meant in a light hearted manner, no offense intended.  If it is offensive, my most profound apologies!

I am an EC-Council Certified Ethical Hacker. Part of my job is to attempt to hack (with pemission) other peoples resources and, if I can hack it, tell them how I did it. If you had a virus scanner running and you automatically perform Windows Updates it is unlikely you got infected. Not impossible - but unlikely. I say that because when a new exploit or virus is released into the wild it can take hours or even days for Microsoft or the virus vendor to catch up. Add that up with the fact even people who update they might only update the virus scanner once a week, and windows update once a month or greater. So there's always that windows of opportunity.

Despite my professional knowledge I have still been fooled by these things so it can happen to anyone. The link probably looked suspicious but it's so easy to get fooled by the appearance on the page that you don't check. If you get something that your not sure is real or not (and you feel brave or stupid depending on how you feel about it) deliberately enter a bad password. Since a phishing website won't really know what your real password is if it takes you to the next level and doesn't say "bad user name and password" the website is bad. I always do this when I have to log into something from a machine I do not administer and don't trust.
