Aneirin -> SCA,battle re-enactment and the like.... (9/22/2007 5:40:11 PM)

Of those of you here that enjoy SCA, LARP, Battle reenactment and living history, may I ask what time period is it that you enjoy, what is the most popular?

LadyEllen -> RE: SCA,battle re-enactment and the like.... (9/23/2007 4:56:16 AM)

I used to do ECW (Sealed Knot)- because its damned cheap by comparison to others! Gave it up when the UMs came along, which was a pity as I was very good with a sword - which I still have by the way - blunt but a real one. The great thing about the Sealed Knot is the number of members - there is nothing quite like the sight of watching five huge pike and musket blocks coming onto the field against you.

What I would like to do? See pic 5 (I think) in my profile - but they dont seem to have anything for girlies for some reason. Shame, as I spreche the Sprache too.

I hereby entirely deny any notion that the sight of a dirty Waffen SS man has any effect on me whatsoever.

Usually the time period after midnight, when the mead flow peaks, the bodices loosen, and...

Oh you meant which era?[:D]

As close to the modern time as possible, say late December 1599

GhitaAmati -> RE: SCA,battle re-enactment and the like.... (9/23/2007 8:28:31 AM)

I do 14th century Italian.....as far as most popular I think it depends on your location. Most places with decent weather, I think alot of the chicks prefer 15th and 16th century...as late in period as possible...because of how much fun you can have with garb..so much more fancy...

Down here in Trimaris (Florida) where most of the year we have 90 to 100 degree weather for events....greek, roman, eqyptian personas are very popular...

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: SCA,battle re-enactment and the like.... (9/23/2007 9:24:39 AM)

i like the part where my cuz shoots off his "grits" cannon.

i aint sure how it works, but they pack it with tnt and grits or something-and man that lil 18 inch barrel makes a helluva kaboom

Vendaval -> RE: SCA,battle re-enactment and the like.... (9/23/2007 9:46:08 PM)

I have not hear of ECW before, Lady E.  Is that a group for battle reenactments? And what eras are represented?

LadyEllen -> RE: SCA,battle re-enactment and the like.... (9/24/2007 2:16:27 AM)

Hi V

ECW is English Civil War - for a decade or so from around 1640 on when we fought three civil wars against the Stuart kings Charles I and II (the former lost his head over it). Its a fascinating period in that one has the old and the new on the same field; cavalry in armour, pikemen in armour and then musketeers and cannon. By the end of the period the former were disappearing and the latter taking over, setting the battle fields more or less up to date now in variant forms. Quite a few settlers from what would become the US actually returned to take part.

Its also interesting as a period because it was the first time that literacy was really widespread, everyone more or less could read and printing presses turned out propaganda, mostly of a religious nature. Into the protestant vs catholic thing came many more smaller groups - usually ultra protestant but also the likes of the levellers, who wanted a clean start for the country along the lines of political thinking of later ages. Cromwell won the wars, and crushed almost all of them - going on rampages in Ireland (apparently) too, which stirred up much of the problems of more recent times.

Cromwell died, parliament invited Charles II to rule again - with limited powers. When Charles died without heir, his brother James came to the throne - he was universally disliked and he was staunchly catholic, so William of Orange was invited in to take over (he was married to a Stuart). James fled, but he and his sons tried many times to regain power - using Irish and Scottish supporters (the Jacobite rebellion) who preferred the idea of a catholic king. William crushed them - which is where the marching season and so on in N Ireland comes from - the protestants rubbing it in basically, and the rest of the modern troubles begins.

Here, aside from this year it is mainly rain and mud and er more mud,The Dark ages seems to be common, played by crusties in armour mostly. ( remember sliding across a ploughed field in heavy rain to get to a sweat lodge at a pagan gathering just because the sweat lodge was the warmest place there).

Whoo hoo Fellow Trimarian! *waves and wonders why we havent met*

I totaly agree with her. A lot of us do "Go Greek" for the hellishly hot summer months. I know I do on occasion. Or Eastern Indian at least.
Other times I am one of those Crazy women in Elizabethan, or Late Italian Ren.   I just changed my persona recently to fit in better with what I was doing/wearing for ages now. I was Gwynvyd < go fig..> a fairly early Welsh persona. < yeah about 15-20 years ago..> Now I changed my name to go with a 1580's Venetian Ladies persona Giovanna. I can't wait to get started on the new garb for it.. *cracks knuckles* but have to finish the across state move first. My fabric is located in too many places right now to lay hands apon it.

Gwyn,
She who dies with the most fabric wins!

edited for grammar

Greetings!

What a cool time period to get to re-enact! I always found the ECW period to be amazingly rife with so many twist and turns that really built the foundations on what came to be. <as you stated all the modern issues you guys now face>
Such a short period of time and so many uphevals, and  changes.
Americans generaly do not learn much about it untill University level studies if they take History. Shame too.... lots to be learned there on how fragile the hold on Govt. can be.

Plus you guys get to play with muskets.. lucky! only in our CW re-enactments do we get to do that here. I did that when I was a child with my mum, and sis. But we switched over to the SCA when I was 11. Not so many period nazis.

Maybe you could find a local SCA chapter, we have female fighters. I used to be one ages ago. (gimpy now ~ too many Equestrian accidents and work injuries)

LadyEllen -> RE: SCA,battle re-enactment and the like.... (9/24/2007 7:05:01 AM)

Oh, I could go and do it again I suppose - but its been twelve years now and I'm not as fit and active as I was - the camping I just couldnt face! And like you say, the period nazis...... I did it for fun, I needed to wear glasses (so did everyone else need me to!) yet some of them!? One would think it was the worst sin imaginable to need to wear something to avoid literally killing people, when one was usually a quarter mile away from spectators.

and muskets.....! ahhhh! the acrid smell of black powder, the singed eyebrows and blackened fingers! Tremendous fun, until it came time to clean them. Matchlocks are what we had, so one had to dip a burning rope straight into the priming pan. There was a trigger mechanism for this, but fingers were much more efficient.

yes Alumbrado one can get appropriate spectacles to wear - but then the nazis say "youre just a soldier, you wouldnt have been able to afford them"

meanwhile, contact lenses might be a good solution of course, but not with so much smoke about the place

Aneirin -> RE: SCA,battle re-enactment and the like.... (9/24/2007 7:18:32 AM)

Yes, the authenticity nazis,I remember them,but they could be proved wrong.Our way was,if we could prove somrthing by means of documentation,we could have it.

Ahhh... you are absolutely right, I had forgotten about the 'caste system' in re-enactment outside of the US.[:D]

chellekitty -> RE: SCA,battle re-enactment and the like.... (9/24/2007 8:40:10 AM)

hehe... ECW is a male soap opera here in the sates...i mean tv wrestling show

if i were to do reenactment, i would be one of those odd-ducks (or is that kittens) that would be from another dimension at the same time as around the 15th or 16th century where magic was happening....yep yep...

Nosathro -> RE: SCA,battle re-enactment and the like.... (9/24/2007 9:58:11 AM)

Well for me, I like the Normans, but I don't own a horse.  Anyway I also do 1500s England.  Yes that big "BOOM!" from the cannon does something.  I would also like to try a wicklock musket but I am left handed so it would have to be custom made, which I am trying to get done.   The English Civil War would also be something I could get interested in, but for some reason it is not very popular or the Promoter of Faires don't want anyone from that period.  I just got back from a Pirate Fest so Pirate as still popular.

Ahhh yes.. our CW group used matchlocks too. I still remember the smell. So much fun! You are right.. between the flying dirt, debris and tons of smoke.. contacts simply are not a good choice. Then the uber nazi's saying your rank or persona couldnt afford glases.. well.. kiss my ass. LOL
Huge reason why we got out of the CW re-enactments. Some period Nazi came up to me and griped me out up one side and down annother < age 10 mind you > for not having my camp matches in a tin case. < I was about to switch them over.. and had the case in my apron.. but they were too busy yelling at me to notice. > That is when my mum pulled us out of it, and told them all to go to hell. I have been a quite happy Scadian ever since. Besides I hated those damn bonnets. *chuckles* I rather liked the times I got to play at being a native girl.. < being Cherokee as I am > but that was rare.  In our SCA down here you can be as in period or as horrificaly out of period as you like depending on which circles you run. Because I am not overbearingly pressured I tend to lean twords the more authentic as I can. I dont go all crazy with it.. but I do my best. I have period shoes, I try to dress my hair accordingly, jewlery, hidden machine sewing. Proper cosmetics. Though wearing anything more then light Grecian in Trimarian heat in the summer gets interesting. *melts thinking about it*  Personaly I love the camping part.

I wish you the best of luck in finding a group. Your never too old to go have fun.

Gwyn

Gwyn! Nice to meet you!

ECW....yea....I cant stop thinking of wrestling.....

CW re-enactors....around here seem to have a MUCH larger population of authenticity nazi's than the SCA, but apparently a few of them have been making the move from CW to SCA recently from the apparent look of our new armor requirements....
