This is supposed to be a great series!
But, it's by Ken Burns so it no doubt will be!
PBS is already selling the 6 part CD on it's home page.
I think it starts tonight at 8 PM.
Anyone know?
Check your local schedule for PBS.
I bought his series  "BASEBALL about 12 years ago and it's fantastic!
He lives about an hour away from where I lived in New Hampshire.
He said he likes it up there because; "being Ken Burns and paying a dollar will get me a cup of coffee in this town." "They're not impressed." (Walpole)
"The War" is about people in 4 different towns and how World War Two affected them.
This should be a great series.

Here's a preview of it:

Not everyone is happy with his work, though:

Ken Burns says The War is the best thing he has ever done. Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez disagrees. The University of Texas journalism professor led Hispanic activists who blasted Burns for initially excluding a Latino perspective. Now they say the two veterans Burns added aren't enough to represent the USA's largest ethnic minority group.

DomKen -> RE: "The War" by Ken Burns starts tonight! (9/23/2007 10:00:25 PM)

While the interviews with the actual particpants was very good and will hopefully inspire more people who fought to get their recollections recorded it was overall a very poor piece. I've never been a fan of Burns' style of taking 10 to 12 hours to say little if anything and this first part was even worse than his usual.

Tacking on the Hispanics from LA ruined what could have been, in someone elses hands, a wonderful attempt to tell the common persons experience of the war. 4 communities in the 4 recognized major divisions of the nation makes sense. Adding LA does not. Why not find hispanic vets from Sacremento?

I'll just put on my DVD's of American Experience on WWII the rest of the week and watch good documentaries about the war.

Hottiegurl -> RE: "The War" by Ken Burns starts tonight! (9/23/2007 10:15:27 PM)

So far since watching it on and off since 8PM I have enjoyed it.  Some times everyone gets upset that this group or that group is missed from a program.  They are just starting to show that Indians gave their all.  Blacks and the American Japanese as well.  It took a long time for anyone to notice women in the war effort besides.  Let the latinos be the next group to be noticed.
It would be  a  good documentry for someone

popeye1250 -> RE: "The War" by Ken Burns starts tonight! (9/23/2007 11:47:39 PM)

Yeah, hopefully they get all that "pc" crap out of the way in the first episode.
They mentioned all the minority groups and "WOMEN" in the first episode.
Gee, maybe they'll acknowledge the ethnic group that has won more Medals of Honor than any other, the Irish.

"...Over 500 thousand Hispanics served in the Armed Forces during World War II. Hispanics’ participation rate was higher than any other minority group. Hispanics earned more Medals of Honor per capita than any other minority group. There were thirteen Medals of Honor awarded to Latinos in WWII, eleven to Mexican Americans, and two to Puerto Ricans."

And Ken Burns does make great pieces of entertainment, while managing to leave huge chunks of history out of them.

What is your point?  That Burns said they didn't?

BTW... as defined by the US government there were not 500,000 Hispanics. Of that 500,000 how many were of European ancestry? How many came to the U.S. directly from Spain or Portugal? How many came from the Philippines?

1) Spanish immigrants are not considered Hispanic when coming to the US directly from Spain or Portugal.

2) All Mexican or Spanish born people who stayed on in the US after the The Mexican War and the Gladstone Purchase and their descendants are not considered Hispanic.

3) Filipinos with Spanish surnames are not Hispanic.

Just because one has a traditional Spanish or Portuguese surname does not make them Hispanic in the eyes of the US Government and there mere word Hispanics.

Does one call all those people who descended from Europe, Neweuros? No. So why are all European descendants of Spanish and Portuguese that come from out of the United States classified as Hispanics?  Are they not Neweuros too? Afterall, the Iberian Peninsula is in Europe and the people who come from it are Europeans. How about all the direct Italian immigrants to South America who use the Spanish verisons of their own Latin surnames, are they Hispanics? Do they have to prove thier kin folks came from Spain and not Italy?

Hispanic is a classification made solely by the United States Government and nowhere else in the world. Frankly, it is rather racist.  Finally the film series is not The Civil War Part II (The World War II years). It focuses on four American towns one north, one east, one south and one west and the impact the war hand on them and them on it. WWII is a backdrop for those stories.

You read the post I was replying to, so you know who and what I was addressing, and if you think that Popeye is Ken Burns, you need to get a grip.

Very telling that it bothers you for someone to put up a link and let people read for themselves - which I notice you did not do with your 'colorful' theories about 'Twue' Hispanics.

I thought this had already started.  Is that just the previews I have been seeing?  I don't watch a lot of television shows, so I tend to only get bits and pieces when I do.  About the only thing I watch is movies and the news.
